James Smith Lough James Smith Lough, 85, of Salem, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home of natural causes on April 23, 2025. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Ashton Lough; his mother, Miriam Smith Lough; his brothers, Harry "Ashton" Lough Jr. and Stephen Lough; and his grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Born on November 10, 1939, in Waynesboro, Virginia, James was a lifelong resident of Salem. He honorably served his country in the United States Army National Guard from 1957 until 1960, when he was honorably discharged. A graduate of Roanoke College in Salem, James was an accomplished swimmer and a proud inductee into the college's Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on to become a beloved teacher at Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville, Virginia, where he also assisted with the high school wrestling team. His dedication to education and mentorship left a lasting impact on countless students. Outside the classroom, James was a devoted father and never hesitated to help others. He was a talented saxophone player and singer, spending 37 years performing in various dance bands in Southwest Virginia. He was also an avid gardener, and that, along with his love of music, enriched the lives of those around him. He is survived by his son, James Ashton Lough, and wife, Grace; son, Joshua Meyer Lough; daughter, Maggie Starkey, and husband, Brad, with children, Chloe and Remi; brothers, Larry Lough and Mark Lough; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. James will be remembered for his kindness, creativity, and unwavering commitment to others. His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, and the many lives he touched throughout his 85 years.2 He was born on November 10, 1939 at Waynesboro, Augusta Co., Virginia.2,3,4,5 He married Sally Ann Davis Hollyfield on December 28, 1965 at Roanoke, Virginia.4 James Smith Lough and Sally Ann Davis Hollyfield were divorced on August 7, 1975 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.5 James Smith Lough married Nancy Lee Bachtell on June 27, 1981 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.4 James Smith Lough died on April 23, 2025 at Virginia at age 85.2

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucille L. Redmon; a son, Elliott E. Redmon Jr. of Hartfield; three daughters, Mrs. Nancy Coen, Mrs. Norma Oppenheimer, both of Richmond, and Mrs. Patricia Marshall of Urbanna; a brother, Arthur I. Redmon of Richmond; a sister, Mrs. Ora Lucas of Staunton; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandson. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Signal Hill Memorial Park. on May 9, 1977.2

Minnie Redmon was buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 563 Bethel Green Road, Middlebrook, Augusta Co., Virginia.2,3 She Staunton - Ora (Redmon) Lucas, 88, of Rt. 2, Box 334, widow of Roller F. Lucas, died on Sunday evening (May 31, 1998) at her residence. She was born Oct. 20. 1909, at Floyd County, a daughter of George L. and Maude (Beckner) Redmon. She attended Western State University, Kalamazoo, Mich., and received an AB degree from Concord State Teachers College, Athens, W.Va. She taught school at Princeton, W.Va., and Stonewall Jackson Primary School at Staunton. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Soroity and the Country Gardners Garden Club. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. Surviving are a brother, Arthur I. Redmon of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at 11 this morning at Bethel Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Roy W. Howard and Clifford D. Caldwell, with burial in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Arthur Redmon Jr., Guy D. Brooks, Dale Smith, W. hampton Haislip, Edwin Summy, Otho and Chester Riley and H. Joseph Williams Sr.3 Her married name was Lucas.2 She married Roller Franklin Lucas.2,3 Ora A.
