Gene Francis Leininger was born May 14, 1923 in Clay County, Nebraska to Frederick Daniel and Henrietta Barbara (Lohmeier) Leininger. Following his schooling, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during WWII in the Liberation of the Southern Philippines. On September 9, 1947 he married Dona Marie Robare at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sutton, and the couple was blessed with 8 children. Gene enjoyed being outdoors and helping Dona with the vegetable and flower gardens. He was a member of the VFW and liked watching his favorite sports teams and rodeo events in person and on TV. Those family members that survive include his children, Janet Harden of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jeanette Anderson and husband Wendell of Pryor, Oklahoma, Theresa O’Neill and husband Lloyd (Mick) of Omaha, Nebraska, Jerome Leininger and wife Cherrie of Alpine Meadows, California, Joseph Leininger and wife Gwen of Tahoe City, California, Mary Leininger and Kathy Culshaw of Roswell, New Mexico, John Leininger and wife Kim of Shenandoah, Iowa, James Leininger and wife Becky of Aurora, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; his siblings Lynn (Olive) Leininger of San Francisco, California, Max Leininger of Sutton Nebraska, Alyce Leininger also of Sutton, Nebraska, Joan Rasby of Sutherland Nebraska and Steve Leininger of Sutton, Nebraska. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Henrietta, his wife Dona, brothers Kenneth Leininger and Leo Leininger, sisters Marguerite Rodgers and Jacqueline Ochsner and grandson Daniel. Helen was born July 9, 1910 in Roanoke, Virginia, the daughter of Bessie Tinsley Denson, and Thomas Lee Denson. She was raised in Roanoke, Virginia. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Jean M. Gray of Roanoke and Newport News; and by two brothers, Ira T. Denson and Charles L. Denson, both of Roanoke. Her husband was a U.S. Army Officer who served in World War II and the Korean War. They lived at various military bases in the United States and in Japan. In 1952, they moved to Newport News, Virginia. She lived in Newport News, Virginia from 1952 until 2003. She moved to Richmond in 2003 to be near her daughter. Helen is survived by two sons and a daughter, Jan M. Gray of Newport News, Virginia, T. Wayne Gray of Burke, Virginia, and Sara Gray Bateman, of Richmond, Virginia. Nine grandchildren. She shared the love of playing bridge, making cakes and holiday decorations, hooking rugs, and participating in wives' club activities at Fort Eustis, Virginia. She was a member of the Bethel Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy in Newport News. She was also fortunate to travel much of the world including Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. on March 15, 2005.1

Garland Monroe Gray, beloved brother, 73, of Salem, Va., passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday, October 31, 2021, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland Madison and Marie Saul Gray; brother, Melvin, and infant sister, Velma. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlene and Bill Yeagley and Janice and Tom Scarce; as well as several cousins. Garland was raised in Roanoke and moved to Salem in 2011. He retired from Roanoke City and Salem City School. Garland loved plants and flowers and was well known in the garden shops of businesses in the Roanoke Valley. Garland got the green thumb in the family and his yard and porches were always filled with beautiful flowers. A lover of all animals, he especially loved his cats and was known to set scraps out for the area critters. He enjoyed meeting with friends at Hardee's in Salem, where he had many of his plants in the dining area. His favorite music was from the 1950's & 60's and he could always tell you who sang which song and its history on the music charts. Garland also enjoyed watching westerns and Hallmark movies on television, especially Christmas movies. He loved to decorate for the various seasons and always had lights in the trees of his yard to celebrate holidays and special occasions. Garland was a devout Christian and loved his church family at Fellowship Baptist Church, of which he was a member and attended for over 50 years. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem. A service will follow on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Manning officiating. Interment immediately following at Evergreen Burial Park. Garland was very special to many people and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank everyone involved in caring and praying for Garland in his final months, especially Good Samaritan Hospice, Fellowship Baptist Church, special caregiver, Tanya Terry, and all the friends who visited and brought milkshakes and sent cards to Garland. on November 2, 2021.2
