The body of Tommy Bennett, 30, who until recently resided in Fayetteville, was found at 8 a.m. by Walter Cole, a brother-in-law. Death had apparently been instantaneous. Gene Combs of the Combs Funeral Home here said the truck had gone off the Cain's Branch Road at a point where a rock slide long ago had narrowed it dangerously. The winding road high on the mountain virtually parallels U.S. 60. Wreckage of the demolished truck was but 100 feet off the busy highway but was not visible. Bennett, who moved to the Cain's Branch area after his recent marriage to Miss Reba Cole, was on his way to work at the Electro-Metallurgical Co. plant at Alloy when the accident happened. His brother-in-law began searching for him when it was learned he failed to report at the plant. Had not the search been made, Combs said, the body and the wreckage could have gone undiscovered indefinitely. He said that while it was only a mile from Gauley Bridge the base of the cliff was almost inaccessable. There was evidence, Combs said, that Bennett had been thrown from the truck some 300 feet down. He suffered a badly fractured skull, deep scalp lacerations, hip and arm fractures and other injuries. Combs said members of a Chesapeake and Ohio freight train crew reported that last night at 10:45 p.m. they saw a dark object plunge down the cliffiide. They thought it was a boulder. on April 5, 1956.11
