Melvin Ashley Boush1,2,3,4
M, b. July 17, 1941, d. July 9, 1968
His Social Security Number was 229-54-0233.5 Melvin Ashley Boush was buried at Rosewood Memorial Park Cemetery, 631 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia.1,3 He was born on July 17, 1941 at Portsmouth, Virginia.1,2,4,5 He married Alice Lillian Stephens, daughter of Samuel Grayson Stephens Jr. and Iva Ruth Burns, on October 16, 1966 at Norfolk, Virginia.1,2 Melvin Ashley Boush died on July 9, 1968 at Chesapeake, Virginia, at age 26.1 He Melvin A. Boush, shot to death early Tuesday in the apartment of a man he reportedly was trying to rob, walked into a stakeout set by Chesapeake detectives, police disclosed yesterday. Authorities said they had been tipped that a robbery attempt would be made on Milton E. Wilson, 51, and that two detectives had staked out his apartment. When Boush entered, with a 17-year-old girl, a brief gun battle ensued in which, police said, Wilson fired the shots that killed Boush. The fact that police were present when the shooting took place had not previously been disclosed. Boush - who had a police record here -had been charged with several cases of breaking and entering in Hanover County, and reportedly had turned informant to help county and state authorities clear up a widespread burglary ring. A. J. Ellis, Hanover commonwealth's attorney, said that with Boush's help, it had been hoped police could track down other members of the ring and their stolen goods. "We feared that he might be killed," said Ellis, "and as a matter of fact he was killed." Chesapeake Police Chief Wilbur E. Sears said officers here knew about Boush and the Hanover case before the shooting. "There are a lot of ifs about this thing," Sears said, "but we're convinced that there was no connection whatever between the Hanover County investigation and Boush's death." Wilson has been charged with murder in the shooting of Boush. His case has been continued to Aug. 21. The girl with Boush was charged with attempted armed robbery. Her case will be heard in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. She lives in Norfolk, as did Boush. Chesapeake Man Charged James F R. Moser, 47, of Chesapeake also is charged with aiding and abetting an armed robbery. Wilson is rumored to keep large sums of money on hand. Detective Lt. C. E. Thompson said that after police had been informed there would be a robbery attempt, detectives C. S. Griggs and R. E. Davis set themselves up at Wilson's apartment. Wilson hid in the bathroom, armed with a pistol. At 2:25 a.m. a downstairs door opened and, police said, the following events occurred: Boush walked in, holding the girl's arm with one hand, a pistol in the other. One of his hands was covered with a stocking. The girl before him, Boush started up the steps to the door leading to Wilson's bedroom, At the top of the stairs, Davis and Griggs stepped out, flashed their badges, drew their pistols and ordered Boush to stop and drop his gun. Boush shoved the girl toward the officers and bolted into the bedroom, then ran for the bathroom door. Davis fired a shot into the ceiling and called to Boush to stop. Wilson fired as Boush entered the bathroom, fatally wounding Boush. Six felony warrants charging Boush with burglary are on file at police headquarters here, and officers said other cases of breaking and entering were under study. He had been scheduled to appear Thursday in Hanover County Court on 21 charges of breaking and entering. on July 13, 1968.6
