She was a native of Newport News and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lane Smith. Mrs. Smith grew up in the East End section of the city and lived in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D. Turner of Hampton Avenue, until she met and married her late husband. Her mother was the late Alice Turner Cosby. Mrs. Smith was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church where she was a teacher of the Lydia Sunday School class for many years. She was a former deacon of the church and a past president of the WMU in which she held various offices. For many years, Mrs. Smith helped her husband in their family business, the Peninsula Dental Laboratory. Most of her life was devoted to raising her three children. She had many nice trips which included a trip to the Holy Land and a trip through Turkey retracing the Apostle Paul's steps. Survivors include two sons, Robert Kyle Smith and his wife, Ellen, of Oakton, Va., and Richard Craig Smith and his wife, Gail, of Mechanicsville, Va; and one daughter, Barbara Harris and her husband, Stan, of Suffolk, Va. There remain also four grandsons, Kyle, Tyler and Andrew Smith and Justin Ballou; and a step-granddaughter, Devon Harris. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Nita Gerringer and her husband, Hugh; two nieces and several cousins. A funeral service will be held at her beloved church, North Riverside Baptist Church, 311 Selden Road, Newport News, on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Quentin T. Madden officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to North Riverside Baptist Church, 311 Selden Road, Newport News, VA 23606. on January 9, 2005.1

     Russell Dillard Hancock Russell Dillard Hancock (November 1, 1930 - March 25, 2019), 88, of Manassas, VA joined his Lord in Heaven on Monday, March 25. He died at his home of 54 years surrounded by loved ones. Russell was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, neighbor, and friend. He was a moral man of integrity who influenced the lives of many. An avid and gifted outdoorsman, he generously shared his love of fishing and hunting with his family and all who showed interest. He was a proud veteran, having served active duty in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. 779 DH Foxx. In 1958, Russell began his 56-year career with NOVEC. He began his vocation as a Lineman and retired in 1994 as District Manager. He is a celebrated 64-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. As a long-time member of the Manasseh Masonic Lodge, Russell was raised to the rank of Master Mason on May 3, 1971. A Masonic funeral service will be held at the start of his planned memorial service and all Master Masons are invited to attend. Proceeded in death by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Marie “Patsy”, Russell is survived by his children Russell A. “Rusty” Hancock of Drewryville, VA, Ed Hancock of Franklinton, NC, Cheryl Hancock of Manassas, VA, and Suzi Smith of Stephens City, VA; one sister, Mary Delores Gold of Abingdon, MD; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. Memorial services will be held at Buckhall United Methodist Church, 10251 Moore Drive, Manassas, on Saturday, March 30, at 11:00am followed by a graveside service at Buckhall Cemetery.2 He was buried at Buckhall Community Cemetery, Prince William Co., Virginia.2,3 He was born on November 1, 1930 at Weirton, Hancock Co., West Virginia.4,2,3 He married Patricia Marie “Patsy” Cary circa 1950.3 Russell Dillard Hancock died on March 25, 2019 at Virginia at age 88.2,3

     Robert Mantell Edwards was buried at Monte Vista Park Cemetery, Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia.3,5 He was born on February 6, 1892 at Danville, Virginia.3,5 He married Carrie Louise Hearn, daughter of Andrew Johnston/Johnson Hearn and Sarah Louisa "Sallie" White, on January 13, 1923 at Bristol, Virginia.3,4,5 Robert Mantell Edwards died on July 27, 1935 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 43.3,5 He A four-months' lllness terminated in the death yesterday morning at 8:45 o'clock of Robert Mantell Edwards, 43, mechanical superintendent of the Daily Telegraph and Sunset News, who passed away peacefully at his residence, 1400 Montclair street. Admitted to St. Luke's hospital April 10 for treatment of what appeared to be an inconsequential ailment, Mr, Edwards' condition steadily became worse and after nine weeks at the institution he was removed to his home when members of his family and attending physicians despaired of his recovery. Death was attributed to cancer of the lung. Burial will be in Monte Vista Park cemetery. Born in Danville, Va., February 6, 1892, Mr. Edwards was a son of the late John E. and Mrs. Susan (Magruder) Edwards. He was named for the famous Shakespearian actor, Robert Mantell. He hegan his printer's apprenticeship in Danville, and worked a short while in Lynchburg, Va., before coming to Bluefleld. Mr. Edwards first came to Bluefield in 1909, Joining the composing room force of the Dally Telegraph as a printer's apprentice. From that humble beginning, he became executive head of the department. After becoming a Journeyman printer in the local shop, he worked on Newspapers at Greenville, S.C., Spartansburg, Huntington, Lynchburg and perhaps other cities. He then returned to Bluefield and had been connected with the local newspapers ever since. Mr. Edwards was a conscientious craftsman, held in the highest esteem by those with whom he was associated. Mr. Edwards answered the call to the colors in 1917, and served overseas for more than a year with the American Expeditionary forces. Soon after his return, January 14, 1923, he married Miss Carrie Hearn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hearn, of Bluefleld, who survives. He also leaves a brother, Samuel D. Edwards, linotype machinist on the Miami Tribune and president of the Miami Typographical union, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Fulton and Miss Julia V. Edwards, both of Richmond. Mr. Edwards was a member of Trinity Methodist church, the Men's Bible class and the Bluefleld Typographical union. Active pallbearers will be: H. I. Shott Jr., John L. Parker, Joseph B. Shelton, Robert T. Noe, H. Edward Steele, Harry W. Ball, J. P. Martin and Arthur Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Bluefleld Typographical union, while flowerbearers will be mwmbers of the Men's Bible class of Trinity church. on July 28, 1935.5
