After serving his residency at Charleston General Hospital, Dr. Aliff entered private practice in Charleston, where he remained active for 35 years. Following his retirement from private practice, he continued serving others through his work with the Hygen Clinics for several more years. Dr. Aliff was director and founding member of the former Putnam County Hospice, a member of the West Virginia Meeical Association, American Medical Association, and Berry Hills Country Club. An avid golfer, he was known to his friends simply as “Bear.” Preceding him in death in 1993 was his wife of 57 years, Dorothy C. Aliff. Surviving: daughter, Lela Paylick of Ludington, Michigan and Paula Newell of Denton, Texas; sons, Thomas of Hurricane and Charles of Charleston; brother, Dr. Robert Aliff, formerly of Charleston, now residing in Tampa, Florida; eight grandchildren and four grrat-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Friday, March 15, 2002, at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Bendall and Dr. J.D. Harrah officiating. Interment wass in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, Scott Depot WV 25560. on March 28, 2002.2

He graduated from Sherman High School and West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, W.Va. He also earned a full scholarship and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Aliff served in the post World War II Far East theater as a medical doctor in the United States Navy before returning to the states and marrying Martha Hardy Lawrence of Huntington, W.Va. Dr. Aliff practiced neurosurgery and neurology in Tampa until moving his practice to Charleston, W.Va., in 1973. He retired in 1977 and moved back to Tampa, where he lived until moving to Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee in early 2008. Dr. Aliff was an avid golfer, and he and his wife loved spending the summers in Blowing Rock, N.C. He is survived by daughters, Roberta Edmondson (husband George) of Tampa, FL., and Martha Anne Aliff of Tallahassee, as well as a son, Mark Aliff (wife Nancy) of Tallahassee, and grandchildren Robert, Hope, Benjamin and Elizabeth. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Mary; brothers, Paul and Perry; a sister Opal; and his wife, Martha. on January 8, 2009.3

     Charles Morgan Aliff Charles Morgan Aliff, 61 of Charleston passed away Friday January 27, 2012 at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Chuck was employed at the Department of Highways for 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and one of the area's best dart players. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Dorthy Aliff. Surviving are his wife, Margaret of Charleston; children, Patrick and Alyssa Aliff of Pinch, Daniel and Melissa High of Oklahoma and Martha and Mike Vermuth of Georgia; brother, Tom and Faye Aliff of Hurricane; sisters, Lela and John Paulick of Michigan and Paula and Bill Newell of Texas; seven grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Paul High of Charleston and David High of Oklahoma; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Skelton of Indiana and Kathy Steakley of Oklahoma. Chuck's body has been cremated and a Celebration of His life will be held Tuesday January 31, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden.      Dr. James Christopher Vest married Kathleen Unknown.11 Dr. James Christopher Vest was born on January 14, 1919 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia.6,5,12 He died on January 5, 2013 at Missouri at age 93.6,5,12 He James Christopher Vest - Past President of the American Cancer Society, St. Louis unit, and a thoracic surgeon, died Saturday, January 5th, after a long illness. He was 93 years old. Dr. Vest was born January 14, 1919 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. He received a B.S. degree in Biology from West Virginia University, and an MD from Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at St. Louis City Hospital, a residency in Pathology at St. Louis City Hospital, and a second residency in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the V.A. Hospital in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He practiced thoracic surgery in the St. Louis area for forty years. Dr. Vest was an avid fisherman and art collector and also loved reading and music. He is survived by two brothers, Bruce Vest and Glen Vest, of Alton, Illinois, and five children: James Vest, Jr. (Gretchen Vest), Mary Vest Denson (Ray Denson), Catherine Vest, Tom Vest (Joyce Vest) and Paul Vest. He was grandfather to Logan Raines, Morgan Denson and Jamie Vest, and great-grandfather to Luke, Lillian and Drew Raines. on January 13, 2013.5

Services were held on Nov. 6, 2011, in First Presbyterian Church, 237 N. Kansas St., in Edwardsville, Ill., with Pastor John Hembruch presiding. Memorials could be made to First Presbyterian Church building fund, 237 N. Kansas St., Edwardsville, IL 62025. Mr. Vest was born Oct. 29, 1920, to Omer and Mattie Vest of Red Dragon, W. Va. In 1957, he moved from West Virginia to Marion with his wife, Garnet, and their three sons, Jerry, Joe and Jan. He owned and operated Delmar Studios for more than 19 years and retired to live on his farm. Mr. Vest served in the Navy four years during World War II and also was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge. He was a great fisherman, hunter, beekeeper and golfer. He enjoyed his life on the farm. He lived the last seven years with his son and daughter-in-law, Jan and Jane Vest in Glen Carbon. He loved his grandchildren and had many wonderful times with his great-grandchildren, Troy, Abbey, Alice and Tyler. He was a wonderful father and loving husband and faced the challenges of his life with courage. He will rest in peace in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet; and two sons, Gerald Eugene Vest of Sydney, Australia, and Paul Joe Vest of Crestone, Colo; as well as his parents and three siblings. Survivors included a son and daughter-in-law, Jan Charles and Jane (Sanders) Vest of Glen Carbon; three grandchildren, Rebecca Perhacs (Scott) of O'Fallon, Mo., Elizabeth Branch (Jason) of Metairie, La., and Scott Vest of Durango, Colo; four great-grandchildren, Troy and Abigail Perhacs and Alice Jane and Tyler Branch; and three brothers, Jim, Bruce and Glen, all of Godfrey. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Raleigh County, W.Va. on November 1, 2011.4

     Mary Ruth Vest Mary Ruth Davis, daughter of Omer and Mattie Vest of Beckley, W. Va., was born July 7, 1926, in Eunice, W. Va., and died Jan. 1, 1973 at Orono, Me., after a lingering illness. She was united in marriage to Darrell A. Davis March 27, 1945 (in Chicago, IL). Four children were born to this union - John, Martha, Teresa and Darrell, Jr. Mary was an active member of the United Methodist church until her health failed. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother and will be missed by family and friends. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Darrell, son John and daughter-in-law Lorna Davis of St. Paul, Minn; daughter Martha and son-in-law Terry Coffey of Lincoln; Teresa and Darrell, Jr., of the home. Also surviving are two granddaugthers, Shellie Davis and Kristie Coffey; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omer Vest, Beckley, W., Va; brothers - Dr. James Vest, St. Louis, Mo; Dr. Bruce Vest, Alton, Ill; Dr. Frank Vest, Beckley, W. Va; Gene Vest, Marion, Ill; Glen Vest, Cleveland, Ohio; sister, Mrs. Clide Browder, Bluefield, W. Va; othrs relatives and many friends. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, from the Zulauf-Banta Chapel with Rev. Charles Richardson officiating. Owen was vocalist accompanied by Mrs. Jack Hardin, organist. Casket bearers were Richard Heft, Robert Stevenson, Ben Anderson, Richard Hayes, Carl Hoover and Victor Meier. Interment was in the Alma Cemetery.
