M, b. November 15, 1929, d. July 9, 2018
David Floyd Spilman was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.3 He was born on November 15, 1929 at Burbank, Los Angeles Co., California.3 He married Mary Helen Clayton, daughter of Rolland Hicks "Pat" Clayton and Ethel Lee Price, on August 5, 1949 at Los Angeles Co., California.1,2,3 David Floyd Spilman died on July 9, 2018 at Santa Clarita, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 88.3 He David Floyd Spilman, 88 years old, passed away in peace on July 9, 2018 at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, California after a recent significant decline in health. He was surrounded by his family and, just hours before his death, enjoyed a clandestine glass of his favorite Chardonnay and Haagen-Dazs Strawberry ice cream. The previous day was filled with extended family visits. He had lived a full and complete life and was much loved. Floyd was born on November 15, 1929 at home in Burbank, California to Howard Louis Spilman and Nellie Pearl McVeagh Spilman, and raised in Burbank across the street from his grandparents David Harvey and Rae McVeagh. Raised during the Great Depression and the war years, the family faced difficult economic challenges, but Floyd's teen years were full of adventure in the growing community. He was a great teller of stories (that were mostly true) about adventures of riding horses in the foothills and watching tank maneuvers, racing a stripped-down model T around town, watching P-38's taking off from Lockheed Airport, and working in the family's business driving an ice cream truck. Oh, and the family favorite, about a connection to Pocahontas, the real one. Floyd met his future wife Mary Helen Clayton in 1943 at the Burbank Baptist Church and it was love at first sight for both teenagers. They married on August 5, 1949, raised a family and enjoyed a good life among friends and family. Floyd's father and grandfather were master machinists who worked at Lockheed. He also started work at Lockheed, in the electro-plating department. This interested him and, when laid off, he went to work at Sunset Plating to learn the trade. In the early 1960's, with a young family to support, Floyd took a big risk when he took a job with Magna Plating to run the hard chrome plating operation. In the late 1960's, he bought Magna Plating and operated the business for almost 40 years until retirement in 2006. Through his hard work and attention to detail, Floyd's reputation grew, and continued to attract major customers in the aircraft and Defense industry, and projects for NASA. His proudest moments were working with degreed engineers to problem solve the engines and other systems of the X-15 NASA test rocket plane and the Lunar Lander engine. He played a part in the beginning of developing the working systems of space exploration and was one of the many who are now known as the "Right Stuff". He also participated in restoration of antique planes and cars, and was proud of his work to help restore World War II aircraft and the 1950's "Flying Wing", a precursor to the stealth planes of today. In retirement, Floyd enjoyed working on his antique car collection and woodwork projects. He specialized in Model A Fords and enjoyed driving the cars and trucks around town, in parades and at car shows. He built furniture for the house and "to order" for family. He also loved to work with his daughter, Dana, in cutting craft patterns and participating in craft fairs. He could also be found swimming in his unheated pool, especially on his birthday in November rain, shine or freezing cold. His bar-b-que skills were renowned and much appreciated on the many family celebrations over the years. Floyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Helen in 2006, his parents, and brother Howard Ben Spilman. He is survived by his sister Janet Laurene Morse, Grass Valley, California. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, David and Donna Parlin Spilman of Petaluma, CA, Tom Flynn and Dana Spilman Flynn of Santa Clarita, CA and Patrick and Cindy Spilman of Castle Rock, CO and Mark and Marilyn McGregor of Fallbrook, CA. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ryan and Marci Spilman and children Derek, Haylie, Evan and Delanie; Chad Spilman, Caylin Spilman, Will and Denise Godfrey McGregor and children Emma and Lily; Katy McGregor Cox and children Cody, Cayson and Charlotte. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends and Family are invited to a graveside service at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. on July 14, 2018.3
