He also Loved his Tomatoes he could and would eat them on everything. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, and sisters; her first husband, Marshall Ferguson, Sr. and by her second husband, Wilburn “Nick” Nichols; and her two sons, Marshall Ferguson, Jr. and Gregory Ferguson. Hazel was employed at Food Lion in Blue Ridge for many years and worked for Mick or Mack in Roanoke years ago. She is survived by stepdaughter and son-in-law, Glenna and Steve Nichols; her special step-grandson, Logan Toney (Bekah Hudgins); her step-great grandson, Axeten Hudgins; and also, stepson, Glenn Nichols and step-grandchildren, Rachel Lucado (Andy), Kate Nichols; and step-great grandchildren, Waylon and Ellie Lucado, Saige and Holden Nichols. The family want to thank Cardinal Assisted Living for all they have done for her especially, Wendy and Mallory, for going the extra mile and loving her like she was family. Arthur Boyd Hoback Arthur Boyd “A.B.” Hoback, 90, passed away at his home in Salem on Monday, October 23, 2017. A.B. was raised in Wythe County. A graduate of Rural Retreat High School, he missed his graduation ceremony in 1945 because Uncle Sam requested his service in the U.S. Army once he turned 18. He was stationed in France, working with The Stars and Stripes military newspaper. After his discharge, he returned to Virginia and worked for 20 years for the Virginia Division of Forestry. He retired from the City of Salem, having worked in the automotive maintenance shop there for over 18 years. A.B. was a member of the Salem Rescue Squad since 1952, and was inducted as a Life Member in 1975. He enjoyed tinkering with cars and small engines, supported Salem High School football, and liked to watch baseball and Nascar racing. A.B. was married to Clarissa “Peggy” for 57 years, until her passing in 2009. They were members of Central United Methodist Church in Salem since its inception in the 1950s. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Rodney Overstreet; grandson, Matthew Overstreet; granddaughter, Katie Fralin and her husband, Shaun; and the apple of his eye, great-granddaughter, Kinsley Fralin. Elaine was the daughter of Charles Edward Shepard and Madalyn Mae Eskridge Shepard of Covington, Va., and the granddaughter of Charles Augustus Shepard and Mary Ann Sheehy Shepard of Milton, Pa., and William Augustus Eskridge and Mary Ella Riley Eskridge of Marlinton, W.Va. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Rayburn Albert Williams of Clifton Forge, Va; her brothers, Mike, David and Joe; and brother-in-law, Bill Thompson. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Williams Lewis; son-in-law, Jimmy Lewis; and granddaughter, Madalyn Kate Lewis. Also surviving are her siblings, Steve (Jan) and Marilyn Thompson and their families; her sisters-in-law, Jean, Anna Mae, Karen and their families; her stepsons, Larry and Mike Williams; and stepdaughter, Linda Coy and their families. Elaine is a graduate of James Madison University/VCU with a degree in education. During her time in school she did student teaching with her mother whom she believed was the best mentor she could have. She taught school while living in Pensacola when Ray was working for the United States Navy. Elaine loved arranging flowers and worked full or part-time doing so in every city in which she lived. She even helped arrange the flowers for the White House wedding of Patricia Nixon. Elaine devoted most of her married life to doting on Anne and later on her namesake, Madalyn Kate. Following Elaine's request, her body was donated to the State Anatomical Program of the Virginia Department of Health for medical education. Her ashes will later be interred in the Arlington National Cemetery with her husband, Ray. The family wishes to thank Bethel Ridge Assisted Living and Medi Home Health and Hospice for their attentive and loving care. Also, many thanks to the Alzheimer's Association. on August 28, 2016.3
