He is survived by a special friend, Agnes Hartenstein; two daughters, Margery Veach of Olathe, Kan. and Gaila Van Dee of Cape Coral, Fla; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Keller and Veda Ewald both of What Cheer; two sisters-in-law, Pat Thompson of Sigourney and Virginia Barrett of Gravios Mills, Mo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1992; his father-in-law, Glen Fear; five brothers, Clarence, Elvin, Richard, Donald and Fredrick. A graveside service memorial will be at a later date in Olathe, Kan. on December 10, 2003.2

     Veda Irene Fear Veda Ewald, 81 of What Cheer died Friday, August 29, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday; family present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to further support P O W organizations and the Diabetes Foundation. Friends may offer condolences to the family at www.hollandcoblefuneralhomes.com. Veda Irene Ewald was born June 7, 1933 in Delta, Iowa the daughter of Glen and Jessie Davis Fear. She attended school through the tenth grade and at age sixteen was united in marriage to Wayne Virgil Ewald on June 7, 1949. The couple started a family right away and assumed their life long positions on the Ewald Farm east of What Cheer. Most of her working career Veda was a full time homemaker and farm wife. In the mid 80’s Wayne and Veda both accepted positions at the University of Iowa where they worked until retiring. Veda was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW, and the Rose Bud Club. She also volunteered her time at the Flea Market and serviced as a board member for the What Cheer Opera House. She enjoyed dancing at the Odd Fellows in Ottumwa or in her own kitchen. Even with as very busy life Veda always made time for her family. Her selfless love for her family meant taking care of their needs and not her own. Veda’s door was always open and no one walked away from her table hungry. She will be remembered as a great mother who was full of laughter and a grandmother who showed love and never had to say it. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wayne Ewald; four sisters, infant Eve Fear, infant Helen Fear, Thelma Keller and Wanda Thompson; and three of her most loyal friends: Maggie Mae, Sissy Sunshine and Shenandoah. Veda is survived by two daughters, Sandra Dellinger of Overland Park, Kansas and Shirley Ewald Cummins of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren, Quinten Brown, Jessikay Brown, Marina Dellinger, Irina Dellinger, Stacey Carrion and Anya Dellinger. She also leaves behind seven great grandchildren, Hunter Brown, Logen Brown, Donovan Thompson, Libby Thompson, Alexander Ortiz, Mason Ortiz and Lukas Carrion.3 She was buried at Garrett Cemetery, Delta, Keokuk Co., Iowa.3,4 She was born on June 7, 1933 at Iowa.7 As of June 7, 1949,her married name was Ewald.1,8 She married Wayne Virgil Ewald on June 7, 1949.8,3,4 Veda Irene Fear died on August 29, 2014 at Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at age 81.3,7

He was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Coal Creek, the son of Oscar and Edna Briggs Ewald. He was raised in the What Cheer area where he attended the Keenersburg Church and the Bismark Country School. After completing school he worked with his dad on the family farm. In 1944 he entered the United States Army and served in the European Theatre during World War II where he bacame a prisoner of war. He was liberated in 1945 and returned home to operate the family farm. He was united in marriage to Veda Fear at the Delta Christian Church on June 7, 1949. Other places he worked were: a bus driver for Tri-County, Ogden Oil Company, Champlin Service Station and as a custodian at the University of Iowa. He retired in 1988. He was a member of the V.F.W., the Oskaloosa American Legion, the D.A.V. and the P.O.W.'s. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Sandra Dellinger of Overland Park, Kan. and Shirley Cummins of Oskaloosa; a sister, Mildred Kirk of Fullerton, Calif; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and thirteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray; a sister, Irene McCain; and a niece, Coleen McCain. Funeral services were held Tues., March 29 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial was in Garrett Cemetery near Delta. A memorial has been established in his name. on April 13, 2005.1

"Abe" Fear and Sarah Conner, on June 21, 1883 at Sullivan Co., Missouri.2,3 Rozella "Rosa" "Rosie" Shifflett died on March 27, 1963 at Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa, at age 95.5,3 She Sigourney - Mrs. Rose Fear, 95, of 421 N. Shuffleton St., died Wednesday at 5:38 p.m. at University Hospitals in Iowa City. She had fractured her hip in a fall at her home on Feb. 24. Born Sept. 6, 1867, on a farm in Sigourney Township, she was the last of 18 children of Andrew and Harriet Bateman Shifflett. She was the widow of James B. Fear, who died Aug. 23, 1911. She moved to Sigourney in November, 1919, and had lived alone. Survivors include a son Harvey D. of Portland, Ore; two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Goodman of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Clifford McBride of Sigourney; three grandchildren, one great-grandson, one great-great-
grandson. She was preceded in death by a son Albert, two daughters, Bessie and Della. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Holm Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Sieck of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta. on March 28, 1963.3

Services: Trinity United Methodist church, at a time to be announced. Burial: Linwood cemetery. Friends may donate to the memorial fund of Trinity church if they wish. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Lloyd Weems of Des Moines; sons, Dennis Weems of Des Moines and Richard (Cindy) Weems of Cumming; three grandchildren, Jason Weems of Orilla, Lori Elvrom and Carrie Weems both of Tacoma, WA; and four great-grandchildren, Paige, Lydia, Tommy and Cooper. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Neola. on December 3, 2015.4

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, October 18th, 2005 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Interment will follow at the Waddell Cemetery South of What Cheer. Visiting hours will begin after 8 A.M. on Monday, October 17th with the family greeting friends from 6 until 8 P.M. that evening. Memorials can be made in her name. Annetta was born on June 18th, 1920 in rural Delta, Iowa the daughter of Howard Clayton and Fennella Fear Crill. She was raised in rural Delta and attended the Burr Oak country school until the 8th grade. Annetta and her brother Clayton then rode their horses to What Cheer to attended High School where Annetta graduated in 1938 with her Normal Training. She then attended Parson College in Fairfield, UNI in Cedar Falls, and then graduated from Penn College in Oskaloosa. While attending Parson College in Fairfield Annetta met and fell in love with Fred Charbonneaux. They would be united in marriage on December 25th, 1944 in Richland, Iowa while Fred was on leave from the Navy during WWII. During her life Annetta taught school at Colbert Country School Southwest of What Cheer, Burr Oak Country School, Gibson Elementary, Rose Hill Elementary, Wright Country School, and at the Tri-County Elementary. She retired from teaching in 1986. Annetta’s enjoyments included caring for and loving her animals, traveling, needlework, flowers, gardening, and spending time with her family. She was a member of the What Cheer Baptist Church, Keokuk County Retired School personnel, Ruritans, Teamsters, Eastern Star, and Linger Longer Club. Annetta’s memory is honored by her Husband, Fred Charbonneaux of North English, her brother, Clayton Crill and wife Christine of Delta, and many nieces and nephews.      Clayton Huff Crill was buried at Garrett Cemetery, Delta, Keokuk Co., Iowa.3,4 His Social Security Number was 482-42-5952.9 He was born on April 7, 1923 at Washington Township, Keokuk Co., Iowa.3,4,5,6 He married Christine Jane Root on October 8, 1944 at Delta, Keokuk Co., Iowa.3,10 Clayton Huff Crill died on February 16, 2013 at Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa, at age 89.3,4 He DELTA — Clayton Huff Crill, 89, died Feb. 16, 2013, at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born April 7, 1923, the son of Howard Clayton and Fennella Fear Crill on the family farm west and north of the rural Keokuk County town of Springfield. He and his older sister, Annetta, walked and rode horses to attend the area country school know as Burr Oak (Washington #1) and then on to What Cheer to attend high school, graduating in 1940. He worked on the family farm and neighboring farms. On Oct. 8, 1944, he was joined in marriage to the “neighbor girl” and the love of his life, Christine Jane Root at the Delta Christian Church. To this union, three children were born, C. John, Sherry and Mary. Clayton served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Asian Theater. He raised draft horses and was inducted into the Draft Horse Hall of Fame in 1993 at the Iowa State Fair. He was a member of the Draft Horse Association and the Quarter Association. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with many friends. He is survived by his son C. John (Marilyn) Crill of Rose Hill; two daughters, Sherry (Layton) Claypool of Delta and Mary (Gary) McMuillen of Delta; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by her parents; wife Christine on Oct. 5, 2012; and his sister, Annetta Charbonneau. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today Garrett Cemetery. No visitation is planned. A memorial fund has been established. Holm Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. on February 18, 2013.3
