Her father was Callie Hugh Marshall, and her mother was Helen Florence Weedman Marshall. Helen attended grammar school in Willis and high school in Dublin. She was Valedictorian of her graduating class. She obtained her undergraduate college degree from Radford College in 1940, and after graduation began her teaching career as a Home Economics Teacher. Subsequent to commencing her teaching career she contracted Tuberculosis and was confined to Catawba Sanitarium for approximately two years. In May, 1942, Helen married Leamon E. Simmons, who predeceased her on December 1, 1979. Leamon was a practicing Certified Public Accountant in Christiansburg from 1954 to 1977 when he retired. After her marriage, Helen moved with her husband to Topeka, Kan., where she taught Home Economics at Auburn High School, Shawnee County, Kan. Helen's oldest child, Joseph L. Simmons, was born in 1949 in Topeka, Kan. In 1952 the Simmons family moved to Salem, and James R. (Bo) Simmons was born there in 1952. Bo predeceased his mother in 2002. In 1953 and 1954, Helen taught Home Economics at Maywood School in Craig County. Beginning in the fall of 1954, Helen taught Home Economics at Christiansburg High School in Montgomery County. In 1959, Helen received her Master's Degree in education from VPI & SU. In 1961 Helen had her third son, John D. Simmons, who survives her. After the birth of John, Helen returned to teaching Home Economics at Shawsville High School in Montgomery County. In 1972, Helen began doctorial studies at VPI & SU, completed her dissertation in May 1976, and received her Doctor of Education from VPI & SU at that time. Helen was always active in church and community. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for 57 years. She taught for years in the Bible Study Fellowship program. She was active in the Christiansburg Women's Club, and in her elder years committed a substantial amount of her time to working with the local mental health organizations and the Social Club. Helen's first love was always teaching Home Economics and her students. Helen will be dearly missed by her sons, Joe and John and her extended family and the New River Valley community, with which she was always engaged. The family especially wants to thank surgeon David Stoeckle, whose surgical procedure on her collapsed lung added many quality years to Helen's life. on January 12, 2012.2

She was involved in many community activities, including the FOP Auxiliary, where she held the office of secretary on both the state and local levels, PMHS Blues Athletic Boosters Club, Buena Vista Presbyterian Church Annual Bazaar Committee and volunteered many years to the Buena Vista Fire Department, Buena Vista Fiddler's Convention and the Buena Vista Rescue Squad Auxiliary. In addition to her father, she is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Edward L. Matheny; their devoted daughter, Abby L. Matheny and fiance, John Rowsey; mother-in-law, Shirley Blackburn and husband, Vaughn; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Suzanne Coleman; nieces, Carrie and husband, Cory Claytor, Lindsey and husband, Scott Fitzgerald; nephew, David and wife, Elizabeth Coleman, and her "little sweethearts", Zach, Katie and Anna Claytor, Riley and Vaden Coleman and their baby sister, due any day. Also, very special friends Debbie, Jeff, Hillary and John David Kerr, as well as many family members and friends. Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. on Monday September 20, 2010 at the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church, 303 E 24th St. with the Rev. George W. Chapman III and Rev. Butch Grow officiating. Burial followed in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. Mr. McDaniel is survived by three children: Tony Lee McDaniel and wife Teresa of Roanoke, Terry McDaniel Dudley and husband Richard, Kaye McDaniel Taylor and husband Ricky, all of Buena Vista and three grandchildren: Eric Shaun Dudley, Brandy Nicole Dudley and Jonathan Dwayne "John T." Taylor. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with Rev. Art Hearne, Rev. Carl Goodman and Rev. Louie Mae Steber was buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, 5737 Airport Road NW, Roanoke, Virginia.8 Her married name was Thomas.2 She married Arthur J. "Jimmie" Thomas.2,4,5,6 Louie Mae Steber was born on December 17, 1924 at Virginia.1,10 She died on August 21, 2012 at Virginia at age 87.10,8 She Louie Mae Stebar Thomas, 87, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 21, 2012. She was preceded in death by three brothers; two sisters; one grandson, Joshua Broughman; and one great-grandson, Jeremiah Thomas. Louie had a big heart that overflowed into caring for other children for over 30 years. She is survived by her sons, A.J. Thomas, Herbert Thomas and wife, Barbara; daughters, Diane Jenkins and Patty Thomas; three grandsons, Brandon Thomas, Dustin Thomas and Hunter Thomas; one granddaughter, Mckinzie Thomas; one great granddaughter, Evelyn Thomas; sister, Gail Hancock; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, August 24, 2012, at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Scotty Carpenter officiating. The interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's North Chapel. on August 23, 2012.8
