He also excelled in his assignments and was awarded many commendations, medals and awards. He distinguished himself in the area of Military Intelligence, reaching the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He was proud of his military career and he loved his country. After retiring from the Army, he received a degree in Education, with an emphasis in Mathematics, from TCU. He taught Math at the Junior High and High School level. He started the Choices Program at Paschal High School in Fort Worth and considered that his greatest civilian achievement. He ran this At-Risk program like a military mini boot camp and in so doing, he gave many students a second chance at a life they thought they had lost. His success rate was very high and he remained friends with many of his students into their adult life. He was so very proud of all of them. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, John Paul King. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judy Layne King of Arlington. He leaves behind a son, Lonnie Dee King of Oregon, and a daughter, Tresa Lynn King Etheridge (husband James) of Arlington, Step-daughter, Michal Miriam Barzyk (husband Robert) of Arlington, step-daughter, Racheleah Rebekah Hester (husband Chris Grieg) of Round Rock, four wonderful grandchildren who he was so grateful to get to know, Abby B., Jack B., Nick B., Luke B. and foster granddaughter Texiera V. "Extended family members" are Cherie Rhoades and Sherry Payrot who, along with Tresa, served as more than caregivers to their "Dad", "Pa" and "Daddy" for the past 5 plus years. Their job description included bringing laughter and joy to the workplace, but the love, honor, and respect they brought all on their own. According to the Chinese horoscope, his birthdate lists him as an Earth Tiger. Some attributes of Tigers include; emotional, sensitive, deep thinker, mental agility, protector of life, workaholic, short temper, and selfish. Roy was all of these and more. The family gives grateful thanks to the Veterans Administration Primary Care Home Based Program (Tamela Bell, RN), to Doctors At Home (Dr. Mary Snelling MD) and to Alevcare Hospice. Interment will occur at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery on May 29, 2022.²
