David was born in Staunton, Va., son of the late Harold T. and Cornelia J. Chittum of Waynesboro. David served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956. He later graduated from the University of Richmond with a degree in Sociology, and then received his Master's degree from Madison College. He began his teaching career at Spencer-Penn Elementary school. David worked for many years with the Martinsville City School System, as a teacher, principal, and social worker as the Visiting Teacher. An avid golfer, he belonged to Chatmoss and Forest Park Country Clubs, where he enjoyed helping others improve their game, as well as his own success which included 17 Holes In One. For many years he enjoyed hunting and fishing as well. David was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother, Hal T. Chittum Jr., and sister-in-law, Betty Chittum. He is survived by two adoring sons, David H. Chittum Jr. and his wife, Mary Kay Kahn-Chittum, of Roanoke, and William Robert Chittum and his wife, Jessica Farnsier Chittum; two grandchildren, Tyler and Aleah Chittum of Jonesborough, Tenn; nephew, Hal Chittum III of Florida; nieces, Ann Chittum of Charleston, S.C., and Janet Sosnoski of Dobson, N.C.4 He was born on August 1, 1932 at Staunton, Augusta Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4,5 He married Jane Norman Henson, daughter of Daniel Norman Henson and Miriam Walters, on August 8, 1959 at Roanoke, Virginia.1 David Houston Chittum Sr. and Jane Norman Henson were divorced on November 22, 1983 at Martinsville, Virginia.2 David Houston Chittum Sr. died on February 12, 2023 at Martinsville, Virginia, at age 90.4,5

George Wesley Townsend Sr. was born on May 31, 1935 at Schenectady, Schenectady Co., New York.1,3,2 He married Jane Norman Henson, daughter of Daniel Norman Henson and Miriam Walters, on December 10, 1988 at Martinsville, Virginia.1 George Wesley Townsend Sr. died on March 5, 2024 at Martinsville, Virginia, at age 88.2 He George Wesley Townsend was born in Schenectady, New York on May 31, 1935 to the late George and Pauline Townsend. He passed peacefully on March 5, 2024 in Martinsville, Virginia surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and their dog, Rambo, in Martinsville, as well as his seven children, George and his wife, Cindy, in Fishersville; Katherine in Bon Air; Theresa and her husband, Andy, in Mechanicsville; Elizabeth and her husband, Boyd, in Powhatan; Paul and his wife, Anya, in Richmond; Frances and her husband, Kevin, in Salem; Sarah and her husband, Ken, in Chesterfield; and his wife's sons, David Chittum and his wife, Mary Kay, in Roanoke and Robert Chittum and his wife, Jessica, in Jonesborough. Affectionately called Pop, he is survived by 18 grandchildren: Meredith, Justin, Rachel, Dakota, Erin, David P., Jacob, Samantha, Tyler W., Wyatt, Scarlett, Georgia, Aleah, Tyler C., Timmy, Bobby, and Rebecca; and four great-grandchildren: David E., Luna, Braxtyn, and Quinn. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Charlotte and Mary, his grandson, Dallas, and his son-in-law, Tim. George graduated from Albany Academy in 1953 and went to Norwich University in Vermont. After graduating from Norwich University in 1957, he served 12 years in the United States Army, both active duty and Reserves. George was employed at Liberty Mutual Insurance until retirement. Pop was a long-time volunteer at Maymont in The Gardens and a soccer referee. George Townsend will be profoundly missed by family and friends. on March 10, 2024.2
