"Sam" Conner Among the many well-to-do and able farmers on Lancaster township none have attained a more enviable reputation for integrity and general ability than Samuel Conner. The interests of township and county have been closely identified with his history from the early days. Coming as he did in the year 1844 to Keokuk county, when the pioneers were just begining to settle here, it early developed upon him to lend his arm and his brain to the development of the lands and institutions of the new country.
He was born on November 9, 1836 in Tippecanoe county, in the state of Indiana. His father, Daniel Conner, was born and reared in Ohio until he arrived at the age of nineteen, at which time he settled in Indiana. in 1843 he again moved to Iowa and in the year 1844 settled in Lancaster township, there being at that time almost no settlers in that part of the state, so that it was necessary to reclaim the land and clear it for farming. The father of Daniel Conner was of Irish descent and spent the greater part of his life in old Virginia, dying in Iowa in advanced years. Samuel's mother died when he was a very young boy so that he remembers little about her and her family, except that she was a woman of fine qualities and well connected.
He was one of four children, there being two daughters and one son besides himself. He came to Lancaster township at the early age of nine years, long before schools had been developed as they are now. He, however, made the best use of all opportunities presented to him in the old log schoolhouse. He remained upon the farm at home assisting in its multitudinous duties until he arrived at the age of twenty-three years, when he married Mary E. Jordan, who also came from Keokuk county when a small child, being a native of Illinois. After his marriage he at once located in the old farmhouse about two hundred yards from where he now lives and here he has remained throughout the years following, giving all of his times and energies to the care of his large family. Nine children in time were gathered at his hearthside, six daughters and three sons. There were Oliver, now dead, Lottie, wife of John W. Scott, a prominant farmer of Lancaster township; Rohena, wife of W. B. Morrow, also a prosperous farmer in the same township; Eva, now dead; Daniel F., who is doing a successful business in Hayesville as a dealer in fine horses; Tima, wife of C. D. Parkhill of the same township; Iona, now dead; Effie, who is unmarried, and Isaac A. remains at home.
Mr. Conner has always been a successful and representative farmer, now owning two hundred and eighteen acres of finely cultivated land, which constitutes one of the best farms in the adjacent country. In political beliefs he has been throughout his life an ardent Democrat and has rendered Democracy many invaluable services and has held various important office in the county. The large family of children born to Mr. Conner, while adding to his responsibilities and labors, must prove a source of great gratification to him. Any parent might well be proud of a life-work exemplified in children of character and attainments of these, and as the years go by upon the old homestead, the subject of this record, surrounded by the many evidences of this life-work and its successes, may well say "It is well." in 1903.⁵ He died on September 19, 1923 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa, at age 85.^6,2,7

     Sarah Conner was buried at Conner Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^2,3,4 She was born on May 8, 1839 at Tippecanoe Co., Indiana.² She married William Abraham "W. A." "Abe" Fear on August 21, 1857 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^2,5 As of August 21, 1857,her married name was Fear. Sarah Conner died on March 27, 1877 at Keokuk Co., Iowa, at age 37.^2,3,6

     Emily "Emma" Conner was buried at Pennington Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^5,6 She was born on July 26, 1841 at Tippecanoe Co., Indiana.^1,3 She married William Jasper Fish on July 2, 1861 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.³ As of July 2, 1861,her married name was Fish.³ Emily "Emma" Conner died on February 14, 1913 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa, at age 71.^5,6

     Sarah Elizabeth Underwood Buried Near Laurel Creek Church half way between Cole Cemetery and Pleasant Cole Cemetery in Pilot, on Coles Knob Road, N 37 deg. 1 min. 50.2 sec by W 80 deg. 16 min. 21.4 sec.³ She was born in 1798 at Franklin Co., Virginia. She married Bird "Byrd" Cole, son of Joseph Cole and Sarah Cooper, on October 21, 1818 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.^4,5,2 As of October 21, 1818,her married name was Cole. Sarah Elizabeth Underwood died on March 30, 1859 at Floyd Co., Virginia.

     Mary Elizabeth Jordan was buried at Conner Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^2,3,4 She was born on December 5, 1843 at Sangamon Co., Illinois.^3,4 She married Samuel F. "Sam" Conner, son of Daniel "Dan" Conner and Jane Cross, on October 9, 1859 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^2,3,5 As of October 9, 1859,her married name was Conner. A." "Abe" Fear married Elizabth Pence on January 29, 1878 at Keokuk Co., Iowa.⁹ William Abraham "W. A." "Abe" Fear died on March 27, 1921 at Delta, Keokuk Co., Iowa, at age 81.⁷

     William Jasper Fish was buried at Pennington Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa; His tombstone reads "Co. H 33rd Ia. inf."^1,2 He was born on July 23, 1840 at Washington Co., Ohio.^4,2 He married Emily "Emma" Conner, daughter of Daniel "Dan" Conner and Jane Cross, on July 2, 1861 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.⁵ William Jasper Fish died on May 24, 1906 at Springfield, Keokuk Co., Iowa, at age 65.^1,5,2

     Amy A. Martin was buried at Rock Creek Cemetery, Jackson, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^2,3 She was born on June 2, 1841 at Iowa.^2,4 As of circa 1866,her married name was Conner.⁴ She married William Conner, son of Jacob Conner and Barbara Furrow, circa 1866.^2,1,4 Amy A.      Barbara Ann Conner was buried at Conner Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.³ She was born on September 14, 1872 at Keokuk Co., Iowa.^1,3,2 As of January 23, 1894,her married name was Bensmiller.⁴ She married Peter Bensmiller Jr. on January 23, 1894 at Keokuk Co., Iowa.^1,2 Barbara Ann Conner SIGOURNEY — Mrs. Barbara Bensmiller, 80, died about 7 a.m. today at her home in Sigourney of a heart ailment following a recent illness of influenza and broncitis. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Conner, and was born September 14, 1872, in Keokuk county. Her husband, Peter Bensmiller, died in 1927. They farmed in the Sigourney comniunity. She was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are two son, Frank of Hayesville and Fred of Sigourney; three daughters, Mrs. Frank Pfannebecker of Sigourney, Mrs. David Homan of Kinross and Miss Gladys Bensmiller at home; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A daughter, Lillian, died in 1927 and a son, Roy, in 1924. on April 10, 1953.² She died on April 10, 1953 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa, at age 80.^2,3

     Peter Bensmiller Jr. was buried at Conner Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.¹ He was born on January 7, 1864 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^2,4 He married Barbara Ann Conner, daughter of William Conner and Amy A. Hanslip on January 23, 1883 at Lancaster Township, Keokuk Co., Iowa.^6,8 William H. "Billy" Hilderbrand married Jennie Unknown circa 1897.⁷ William H. "Billy" Hilderbrand died in January, 1945 at Kansas at age 83.⁵

     Mary Ann Morgan was born circa 1829 at Illinois.³ As of November 8, 1849,her married name was Conner. She married Aaron Conner, son of Jacob Conner and Barbara Furrow, on November 8, 1849 at Keokuk Co., Iowa.^1,2 As of before June 1, 1880,her married name was Morris.⁴ Mary Ann Morgan married McHenry "Mack" Morris before June 1, 1880 at Kansas.⁴
