His Social Security Number was 526-84-1437.4 William Alexander Doyle was buried at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona.1 He was born on April 30, 1948 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,4 He married Michelle Ann Strohecker on May 25, 1974 at Nogales, Mexico.1 William Alexander Doyle and Michelle Ann Strohecker were divorced in 1977 at Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona.1 William Alexander Doyle died on May 1, 1997 at Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, at age 49; Shot and killed by police while under the influence of alcohol.1,4 He Man cops shot wanted to die, police contend. Author: Tim Steller
Tucson police maintain that William A. Doyle's death amounts to a case of officer-assisted suicide. "Apparently, it was his intention to be killed by police officers," said Capt. John Leavitt of the Tucson Police Department. But that assessment doesn't sit well with the 49-year-old's friends and family. Doyle, armed with a handgun, held officers at bay for an hour early yesterday morning at a 7-Eleven at South Columbus Boulevard and East 29th Street. When he disobeyed officers' warnings by leaving the area still armed, three officers fired gunshots. Doyle, struck in the leg, torso and head, died at the scene. "When I first got told about this, I was willing to accept that it happened the way they said it happened. After all, he had a gun,'' said Herbert Wade Doyle Jr., William's older brother. But later he had second thoughts. "They could have apprehended him without killing him," he said. William Doyle, a security guard for Reliant Protective Services, went out to celebrate his birthday at about 10 p.m., said neighbor Meggin Fox. He was dressed in a gray suit, white shirt and hat, and was already drunk, Fox said. About 1:15 a.m., officers pulled Doyle over as he drove his black-and-white checkered Chevrolet Impala, Leavitt said. Doyle's blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.20 - twice the legal limit. Officers released him just before 2 a.m. to take a taxi home, Leavitt said. When he got home to his second-floor apartment overlooking a swimming pool, Doyle apparently picked up his revolver and went to the nearby 7-Eleven. "Every clerk over there was his friend," said Sherry Lasuzzo, the manager of the apartment complex in central Tucson. Inside the store, he told the clerk he was going to kill himself and pulled out his revolver, Leavitt said. Then he left the store and settled into a spot next to a water vending machine. Officer Robert Boone arrived at about 2:15 a.m., following a 911 call by the clerk. Boone, who is trained as a negotiator, said Doyle was despondent over his earlier arrest. "He was afraid that DUI was going to make him lose his job," Boone said. While speaking with Boone for about 45 minutes, Doyle kept the gun pointed at his own head. At one point, the gun discharged once and struck the water machine. Tucson police contend that he was pounding his head with the gun before it went off. But Dave Mason, a friend of Doyle who was watching the incident from a nearby balcony, said Doyle was pounding the water machine. During the incident, Doyle was also listening in to discussions about his standoff on a police scanner, Boone said. "Bill was screaming that 'It's just not going to go down this way,' " Mason said. "About 40 minutes into it, he got up and started walking home," still carrying the handgun. His departure northward on Columbus went against the orders of officers, who warned him to stop or be shot, Leavitt said. First the officers unleashed a police dog. But instead of knocking Doyle down, it lunged low and bit him, Leavitt said. Mason believes Doyle fired a shot into the ground at that point, but police could not confirm that. Next, three officers who were behind Doyle shot at him, almost simultaneously, said Tucson police Capt. Kevin Danaher. One of them, Sgt. Dave Azuelo, fired a second shot immediately after. Three of the four shots apparently struck Doyle. "If we had allowed him to keep walking (toward residences) with the gun, we would be remiss in our responsibility to the public," Danaher said. After the officers fired, another shot discharged from Doyle's gun, Leavitt said. That happened when an officer approached Doyle where he lay, still moving, on the sidewalk. The officer tried to put his own finger between the hammer and frame of the gun to keep it from firing, but it went off, Leavitt said. It's unclear whether that shot also struck Doyle, police said, but he was dead at the scene. Mason doubts that all three shots that struck Doyle were necessary. He said he heard three shots fired about a half-second apart and could see an officer who fired. However, he could not see Doyle from his vantage point. "The third shot was overkill," said Mason, who like Doyle, lived at the Columbus Terrace Apartments. Deputy County Attorney Ken Peasley arrived at the scene in the early morning and came to a preliminary conclusion about the shooting. "Based on everything I've seen, not only were they justified, they would have been irresponsible had they not done what they did," Peasley said. The three officers who shot at Doyle were Azuelo, who has been with the department for 11 years; Sgt. Frank Raul, an 18-year officer; and Lt. Clay Kidd, a 10-year officer. They were put on administrative leave and offered counseling after the shootings, Leavitt said. Once the police investigation of the incident is complete, Peasley will decide whether criminal charges against any of the three are warranted. William Doyle has a history of threatening to kill himself, his brother said. "He's said it before and he never did it," Doyle said. William Doyle was a Vietnam War veteran who was an Air Force photographer during the war, Wade Doyle said. But in the early 1970s, Doyle was diagnosed as schizophrenic and discharged from the service, his brother said. Around the Columbus Terrace Apartments, Doyle was known as a talker. "I think his hobby was conversation," Mason said. Said Wade Doyle: "I don't doubt that the whole thing was that he wanted attention. But not necessarily (for them) to kill him." on May 2, 1997.5
