I. and Junie Etta Lilly Meador. She had been a resident of Crab Orchard for the past 35 years and was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Crab Orchard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, and a daughter, Geneva, in 1947 and 1952, respectively. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lydia Clara Lilly, Crab Orchard, Mrs. Calfin (Merle) Lester, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Jesse (Reccie) Canaday, Midway; four brothers, Leyton R. Meadows and Leonard Meador, both of Crab Orchard, John H. Meadows, Glen White, and Willard Meadow, Coal City; one sister, Mrs. Leo (Tiny) Williams, Daniels; five stepsons, John, Manhan, Md., Virgil, Spotsylvania, Va., Jim, Columbus, Ohio, Vonley, Shady Spring, and Willie Furrow, Crab Ochard; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ethel Houck, Brentwood, Md., and Mrs. Mabel Canaday, Columbus; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ace Boiling, Jesse, Jackie, and Joy Cannaday, John Meador and Dale Lester. on January 18, 1970.1

Ethel Emily Furrow Ethel Emily Houck, 95, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Friday, January 11, 2008 at Blue Ridge Haven East Nursing Home. Born February 14, 1912 in Beckley, WV, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Cora Cockran Furrow. Ethel worked for U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C., where she was integral in creating wire harnesses used in space shuttles. She was also a member of Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, MD. She was preceded in death by: her husband Aubrey, two daughters Iris Allman and Edna Sledzinski and a niece Betty Lipkey. Surviving are her son Thomas F. Houck of Union, WV, her daughter Alma Fobes of Sharpsville, PA, a niece Barbara Bruce of Fredericksburg, VA, twelve grandchildren and thirty eight great grandchildren. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mr. Furrow was the Sunday school superintendent at Mt. Alexander United Methodist Church at Sarton where he was a member for 15 years. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Ralph Michael Furrow. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Kathleen Pence Furrow, whom he married Feb. 23, 1946; a daughter and son-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Steven (Martha Furrow) Meadows and a grandson, Nathaniel (Nate) Meadows, all of Meadow Bridge, and three sisters, Ethel Houck of Brentwood, Md. and Opal Tumber and Mabel Canaday, both of White Sulphur Springs. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. on July 29, 1994.8

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Austin Furrow and Pearl Marie Houck. Mabel was an avid reader and loved to draw, travel, do crosswords and watch NASCAR. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always looked forward to cooking Sunday dinner and having reunions. Mabel was a member of the Alvon United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Canaday, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors: son James (Tommy) Canaday and wife Carol (Sue), of Wayside; daughter Sandra (Sissy) Nolen and husband, Marvin (Shorty), of White Sulphur Springs; daughter Helen Hoke and husband Billy, of White Sulphur Springs; and son Michael Canaday and wife, Roberta, of Meadow Bridge. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and sister Ethel Houck. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, West Virginia. on May 2, 2006.3
