Mr. Vest was born at Jumping Branch, Summers County, W.Va., on Feb. 26, 1923, a son of Joe Vest and Izola Furrow Vest. He was a retired coal miner and finished his career with Westmoreland Coal Co., at the Riffe's Branch Division as an electrician. Josh served his country during World War II. Mr. Vest was a Baptist. He was a simple man who lived a simple life while working to improve the lives of his family. Josh was a jack-of-all-trades, and the community handyman. He never turned away a person needing a helping hand. His passion of fabricating homemade inventions in his workshop never ceased, even after losing his eyesight. Josh was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was the last surviving member of his birth family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Earl, Andy, Omer, Jack, and Hubert Kesler Vest; his sisters Georgia Vest and Mabel Vest; his beloved son-in-law Christie Meadows; and his loyal companion and best friend Trixie. Survivors include his wife Hulda Smith Vest, a son Howard Vest and wife Karen of Beckley, and daughter Ruth Vest Meadows of Shady Spring. Also grandchildren, Christy Ann Meadows Harvey and husband Tommy of Summers County; Amanda Lynn Meadows and James Joshua (J.J.) Meadows of Shady Spring; step-grandchildren, Lisa Withrow and husband Keith of Prosperity, W.Va., Brittany Pachuta of Beckley; step-great-grandchild, Ellie Withrow of Prosperity; and numerous friends and neighbors. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. on December 25, 2005.⁴

near Mt. View. Born near Mt. View , Raleigh County, he was a farmer and was engaged in sawmilling. In addition to his mother, who reside at Mt. Born Oct. 22, 1946 at Summers County, he was the son of Georgia Vest of White Oak and the late Claude Raymond Vest. Mr. Vest lived most of his life in Summers and Raleigh Counties and was a truck driver. Other survivors include his wife, Dovey Whittington Vest; a step-son, John Mitchem in the U.S. Army; two step-daughters, Mildred Mitchem of Pennsylvania and Mary Mitchem of Hinton, and a brother, Hubert Vest of White Oak. Burial will be in the Simmons cemetery at Mt. View. on November 24, 1989.⁵

Born June 16, 1951, in Summers County, he was the son of Georgia Vest Vest of White Oak and the late Claude Raymond Vest. Mr. Vest was a lifelong resident of Summers and Raleigh counties. Other survivors include his wife, Mary Vest. Burial will follow in the Simmons Cemetery on the Mt. View Road. on August 6, 1991.²

     Mary Lois Earles Mary L. Vest, 93, of Hinton, W.Va., passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Main Street Care following a long illness. Born July 30, 1920 at Athens, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph G. Earles and Nommie Hoye Bird Earles. Burial was in the Simmons-Sluss Cemetery at Mt. View, W.Va.¹ She was buried at Simmons Cemetery, Mountview, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.^2,1 Her married name was Vest.¹ She married Hubert Jackson Vest, son of Claude Raymond Vest and Georgia Lee Vest.¹ Mary Lois Earles was born on July 30, 1920 at Athens, Mercer Co., West Virginia.^2,1 She died on April 21, 2014 at Hinton, Summers Co., West Virginia, at age 93.^2,1

Born Jan. 30, 1916, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Estil Wright Underwood. Mrs. Vest lived most of her life in Raleigh and Summers Counties, and was a member of the Mary Jane Memorial Methodist Church at Jumping Branch. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Charlie and Arnet Underwood. Survivors include her husband, Jack Vest; three sisters, Georgia Lowe, Mary Tolliver and Connie Sluss, all of Jumping Branch, and six brothers, Jack Underwood of Petersburg, Va., Benny Underwood of Baltimore, Md., Osban Underwood of Garden Ground, Daniel, Howard and Roland Underwood, all of Jumping Branch. Burial will be in the Sluss family cemetery on the Mount View Road. on November 25, 1988.²
