He was a Navy veteran of World War II. For many years, Mr. Smith was a huckster in the Williamson Road area and was known to many as the Vegetable Man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pancie Monroe Smith and Nannie Belle Perdue Smith. Surviving are his wife, Mildred F. Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Jeffery Jackson, Roanoke; grandchildren, Dennis W.      Ella Cleo Horne was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.² Her Social Security Number was 223-24-1659.⁴ She was born on May 13, 1922 at Catawba, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^4,3 As of October 12, 1939,her married name was Manning.¹ She married Calvin Cleveland Robert "Jim" Manning, son of Oliver Wendell Manning Sr. and Pearl Mae Puckett, on October 12, 1939 at Roanoke, Virginia.¹ Ella Cleo Horne and Calvin Cleveland Robert "Jim" Manning were divorced on December 16, 1944 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁵ Ella Cleo Horne died on September 24, 2002 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 80.^2,4,6,7 She THOMPSON, Cleo Manning, 79, of Roanoke, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 24, 2002. She was born in Botetourt County and had resided in Salem most of her life. She owned and operated Cleo's Barbecue Restaurant in Salem for many years, and had retired in 1985. She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilmer "Bill" and Gladys Duvall Horne. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Wilmer "Bill" and Brenda G. Manning, Stevenson "Lynn" and Kimberly A. Manning; brothers-in-law, Jim Ruscigno, John Naff, W.G. Richardson; nine nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren; ten great-grand-children. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. on September 25, 2002.²

     Wilmer Oliver Robert Manning was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.² He and Joyce Ann Hayes were divorced.¹ Wilmer Oliver Robert Manning was born on February 10, 1940 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^1,2 He married Joyce Ann Hayes on March 29, 1963 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.¹ Wilmer Oliver Robert Manning married Brenda Mae Guilliams on December 23, 1970 at Roanoke, Virginia.¹ Wilmer Oliver Robert Manning died on November 20, 2022 at Virginia at age 82.² He Wilmer Robert "Bill" Manning - Bill Manning, 82, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 20, 2022. He was born on February 10, 1940, to the late Cleveland and Cleo Horne Manning. He retired from VDOT as an Assistant Resident Engineer in 2005 after 43 years of employment in various positions. After his retirement, he enjoyed fishing trips at the beach, watching his grandchildren play sports, and gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Nannie, and Daddy Bill Horne; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marie and Paul Guilliams; and brother, Lynn Manning. Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Brenda Manning; daughter, Kim Newton and husband, Kenny; son, Scott Manning, and wife, Kacie; grandchildren, Hannah Newton, Kendall Manning, and Alec Manning; step-grandchildren, Karter Yopp, Drew Yopp, Lauren Sheetz, and Logan Sheetz; sisters-in-law, Kim Manning and Wilma Guilliams; and brother-in-law, Steve Guilliams.
