Mattie was a member of the Second Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a homemaker. Mattie was known as a very gentle person. She loved to read, work search puzzles, and go to flea markets. Her husband Gerald was known as the “Sock Man” at the flea markets. She highly enjoyed trips to the Smoky Mountains. Mattie loved getting her hair done weekly. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Compton Wykle, daughter, Patricia Wykle Erskine, sisters, Mary Hedrick, Delores Boyce, Danese Saunders, Gay Dalton and Rosie Wickline and brothers, Theodore, Walter, Gordon, Bernie and James Elmore. Survivors include her sister, Betty Trent of Second Creek, WV, son in law, Robert Erskine of Ronceverte, WV, a host of nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Alinda Perrine. Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairview Christian Church at 2 p.m. Thursday with Dr. R. R. Gray and the Rev. Leroy Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. on December 29, 1954.6

Mr. Pomphrey was a dedicated family man. He loved his grandchildren dearly. He also loved his associates with whom he worked at Walmart, and the feeling was mutual. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Hinkle Pomphrey; a son, Don Lee; a daughter, Launa Pearl; a granddaughter, Tammy Bostic Mcie; and brothers, Earl, Buster and Charles. He is survived by a daughter, Sarah Bostic (Fred) of Ronceverte; sisters, Betty Harvey of Roanoke, Va., and Anna Firebaugh (Dale), also of Roanoke, Va; granddaughter, Jennifer Rider (Luke); grandson, Freddy Bostic; great-grandchildren, Evan Bostic, Lakene Flenner (Brandon) and Trista Mcie; and great-great-granddaughter, Ellie Brielle Flenner; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. on September 23, 2014.3
