Chatham and Jane "Jenny" Caruthers/Carothers, on June 24, 1897 at Williamsport, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.4 Louisa Mann "Louise" Larzelere died on November 13, 1938 at Old Lycoming, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, at age 66.1,2 She WILLIAMSPORT — Mrs. Louise L. Chatham widow of Newton C. Chatham, died last night at her home, "The Maples." Despite falling health for the past year she had continued her practice as one of the two women lawyers in Lycoming County. Two sons and a brother survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at her home with interment in Wildwood Cemetery. Mrs. Chatham was born 66 years ago at Doylestown, graduated from the Money High School in 1888 and moved here in 1890. At the age of 16 she began her music studies, serving for 35 yean as organist and choir director in various churches She finally gave up this avocation to study law and until the part year was Lycoming County's only woman lawyer. When she opened her law offices here she specialized in domestic relations cases and probate work. She was an organizer of the Lycoming County Parent-Teacher-Association, later being made its honorary president, holding a similar honor from the Williamsport Civic Club, which she also helped to organize. She was appointed by the governor to the first Lycoming County Mothers Assistance Board, resigning this position to enter law school. She matriculated at the Boston University Law School, following three years' local study, graduating in June, 1923, with highest honors in a class of 250 students. She passed the Massachusetts state bar examinations before being admitted to practice in the local court and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court late in 1923. Resuming her civic life in Williamsport after completing her law studies, Mrs. Chatham was appointed to the State Welfare Commission in 1924 and that same year was chosen first woman vice chairman of the Lycoming County Republican Committee. She aided in organizing the Republican Women's Club, now UIP Republican Women's Council, and was later made an honorary chairman of the group. She was county and later city chairman of the Suffrage organization, and was city chairman of the Food Conservation Army, opening the first canning kitchens. In addition to her law practice Mrs. Chatham's business interests included the development of "Chatham Maples" along the Susquehanna Trail north of this city. She had been a member of Presbyterian Church since the age of 12 years. on November 14, 1938.2
