She was born in Roanoke, on May 28, 1937, to Herbert and Louise Rickman. She is survived by her loving husband, Jim, to whom she was married for 61 years; son, Jim Jr. and his wife, Susan; daughter, Mary Beth; granddaughters and their husbands, Beth and Blake Layfield, Theresa and Winn Seay, Caitlin and Sean Amirzadeh, and Sarah and Marcus Gillon; great-grandchildren, Sophia and James Layfield; and special niece, Janet Sheppard. Phyllis worked for many years as a first-grade teacher's aide at South Salem Elementary, a job that allowed her to share her love and concern for children. Over the years, she brought home many students who needed help due to physical disabilities or difficult family circumstances, or simply the love that she gave them so generously. In later years, she managed, then owned and managed, The Clothes Rack, a women's and little girls' clothing shop in Oak Grove Plaza. Many women in Roanoke County fondly remember shopping for special little girls' dresses there, often after receiving a call from Phyllis that a new shipment would be arriving on a Tuesday morning. Her kind heart, friendly personality, and genuine interest in others shone in this little community shop. Phyllis was a loving and gentle spirit who always put others first and never sought the spotlight. She loved her family and friends, planting flowers, chatting on the phone, shoe shopping, creating wreaths and floral arrangements, taking beach trips with her family, and spending time at Smith Mountain Lake - particularly when she drove the pontoon boat. She was never happier than when she and Jim built a home there, which she decorated with her own bright and cheerful style. She was an active member of the Indian Pointe Property Owners' Association until she could no longer participate, planning summer picnics at the shared pool, as well as community Christmas parties. Phyllis also hosted many wonderful Crowgey family reunions and birthday parties on her and Jim's big back deck in Roanoke. Neighbors will remember block parties held in their front yard, with live music and plenty of good food. Alzheimer's took nearly everything from her over time, but it could not steal her essential kindness, and while she could no longer speak coherently in the last chapters of her life, she never lost the words signaling agreeability and compassionate understanding: OK, I know it, sure, that's right. Her family would like to thank her loving and devoted caregivers, Ebony Thompson, Monique Thompson, Jasmine Thompson, and Ricarda Calloway, without whom they could not have managed to keep her in the comfort of her own home, as well as her friend and hairstylist of many years, Joe Jones, who called on her at home to keep her looking beautiful over the last year and a half of her life. We also appreciate the compassionate care of Carilion Hospice nurses Sarah, Jimmy, and Patience, who were very supportive during the last two weeks of Mom's life. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on March 16, 2020.4

Crowgey, 86, passed away in Roanoke, Virginia, in the company of his children, on Monday, November 29, 2021. He was born in Wytheville, Va., on September 23, 1935. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Ann Rickman Crowgey; his parents, John Howard and Pearl Ellett Crowgey; brothers, Hugh Crowgey, John Crowgey, and Junius Crowgey; and sister, Helen Crowgey Sheppard. He is survived by his son, James Crowgey Jr., and his wife, Susan; daughter, Mary Beth Crowgey; granddaughters and their husbands, Beth and Blake Layfield, Theresa and Winn Seay, Caitlin and Sean Amirzadeh, and Sarah and Marcus Gillon; great-children, Sophia and James Layfield, Scarlett Gillon, and Winn Henry Seay; special niece, Janet Sheppard; sisters, Emma Louise Leidholdt, Mary Pafford, and Anne Borthwick; and sisters-in-law, Mary Beth Crowgey and Mickey Crowgey. He is also survived by his constant, faithful companion, rescue dachshund, Sally. Jim grew up in Wytheville, Va., later moving with his family to Abingdon, then to Roanoke, where he attended William Fleming High School. He lettered in wrestling there, a sport he loved and supported throughout his life. He graduated from Virginia Tech, known then as Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in 1960. Jim was co-captain of the VPI Wrestling Team in his senior year (1958), winning a silver medal at the Southern Conference Championship that year. Jim was inducted into the Roanoke Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016. Jim retired from a thirty-five year career with General Electric in 1997, where he worked as an Electrical Engineer and Unit Manager in Navy and Marine; Gas Turbine; Excavating, Mining, and Testing; Power Conversion; Navy Program Military Systems, Engineering and Sourcing, Government Sales and Product Engineering; and Electric Vehicle. He was active in the Elfun Society, a group of active and retired GE employees that performed numerous community service projects. Jim was dedicated to serving others, through his church and charitable organizations. He was a founding member and long-time secretary of the Methodist Men of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. He was known for his sense of humor, warmth, and creation of nicknames for all the members, dubbing himself "T-Bone." Jim also served on the WHUMC Board of Trustees as Outdoor Property Chairman, organizing and leading work parties to trim hedges, rake, mulch, and beautify the church property. He was a faithful attendee of the 9:00 Worship Service and, for a number of years, a member of the church's choir and barbershop quartet. Jim was active in volunteer work for the March of Dimes, which has saved millions of babies from death and disability, for many years, serving as the Roanoke Walk Chairman and creating the GE March of Dimes Flea Market Extravaganza, which raised thousands of dollars for the organization. He also chaired the March of Dimes Virginia State Executive Board's Communications Committee. Jim was a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels. In his leisure time, Jim loved biking the backroads of southwest Virginia with a group of his retiree friends. Every Thursday, the Backroad Bikers would meet for a twenty-five mile ride, regardless of temperatures or inclement weather, in beautiful places like Burkes Garden, John's Creek, Arcadia, and Potts' Creek. Once again, Jim created nicknames for all the bikers. He was "Dog-Bait," the trailing cyclist. The Backroad Bikers donated money to build a shelter along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and they built several kiosks along the Roanoke-Salem Greenway. One of his greatest joys came in writing typically tongue-in-cheek weekly Ride Reports for the group. After his retirement from GE, Jim followed his dream of becoming a writer, writing and publishing four novels, "Forever Eagles," "The Battle of Eden Springs," "Guardian of Eden Springs," and "One More Chance." Jim wrote about people and places he knew and loved, with realistic conflicts and deep feeling, and always a happy ending. Nothing pleased him more than knowing a reader enjoyed and related to one of his books. Most importantly, Jim was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, caregiver, and friend. He lived a life of service to others, by which we were greatly blessed. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on December 2, 2021.4
