Jack Lewis Vincent Sr.1,2,3,4
M, b. December 20, 1924, d. August 11, 2013
Jack Lewis Vincent Sr. Jack L. Vincent of Roanoke, Va., died on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center with family at his bedside. Born in Worth, W.Va., in 1924, he was the son of Carl Vincent and Jesse Keatley Vincent. A member of Williamson Road Masonic Lodge 163 and of Northminster Presbyterian Church, he was preceded in death by wives, Janice Peck Vincent (1991) and Hinton Salmons Vincent (2006). Surviving him are his brother, Bob Vincent and wife, Emily, of Glendale, Ariz; daughter, Becky Loving and husband, Michael, of Roanoke; daughter, Pam Kerestes and husband, Gary, of Midland, Mich; and son, Jack Vincent Jr., of Roanoke. Also surviving are grandson, Taylor Poff, of Roanoke; granddaughter, Sharon Saroian and husband, Mike; grandson, Brian Kerestes and wife, Tara; and four great-grandchildren. Graduating from North Fork (WV) High School in 1942, Jack enrolled in the VPI (Virginia Tech) School of Engineering and remained a fan of the school throughout his life. However, he left before graduating to fight for his country in World War II. His duties during the war included service as a radio operator and gunner on a B-17 bomber. He mustered out as a staff sergeant in 1946. After the war, Jack moved to Roanoke where he attended National Business College and eventually met and married Janice Peck. For a brief period after their marriage, Jack and Janice lived in Columbus, Ohio, and Grundy, Va., as he began his career in accounting. Returning to Roanoke in the early 1950s, they raised three children while Jack worked for several different companies prior to retiring in 1990. Jack served as a deacon and an elder at Northminster Presbyterian Church. He also assisted in the successful effort to bring tennis courts to Huff Lane Park. Perhaps his most rewarding community service, however, came from his work with the Boy Scouts during the late 1950s and 1960s. Serving as a scoutmaster and as an assistant scoutmaster, he was affiliated with several troops including 26 at Northminster and 424 at Preston Oaks Baptist Church. In his retirement years, he became interested in genealogy. His efforts prompted him to learn a bit about modern microcomputers while connecting some branches of the family tree that had not been explored before. "I have never known a more honest man than Dad."5 He was buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, 5737 Airport Road NW, Roanoke, Virginia.5,6 He was born on December 20, 1924 at Worth, McDowell Co., West Virginia.5,4 He married Hinton Adelene Salmons, daughter of Eldridge Swanson Salmons and Vera Ruth Lee, on February 15, 1998 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,3,5 Jack Lewis Vincent Sr. died on August 11, 2013 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 88.5
