His Social Security Number was 572-10-3250.6 Hugh Lyle Henshaw Jr. was born on February 19, 1918 at Raton, Colfax Co., New Mexico.6,2,3,4 He married Ruth Kathryn Cartwright circa 1940.2,7 Hugh Lyle Henshaw Jr. died on December 12, 2000 at Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 82.7,6,2 He LONG BEACH - Hugh Henshaw had been busy in his workshop, hand-carving wooden animals, boats and fire trucks for children facing a bleak Christmas. The retired Long Beach assistant fire chief carved hundreds of them every year, and local police and firefighters distributed them during their annual food and toy drive. The Salvation Army and some church groups also saw to it that Hugh's toys found their way to kids who needed them. Some of this year's crop have been distributed and Hugh had filled boxes with others that he'd finished. He was working on more when his busy hands were stilled. Those toys sit on his workbench, in various stages of completion. Hugh died Tuesday at age 82, some 30 hours after falling into a diabetic coma. "He died right here in the home surrounded by his family. That was good for all of us. That was what he wanted," said his daughter, Donna Mason. Hugh Lyle Henshaw Jr. was born in Raton, N.M., on Feb. 19, 1918, and moved to Long Beach in 1923. His father, Hugh Sr., owned and operated H.L. Henshaw and Son service station at 5595 E. Seventh St. in Long Beach. Hugh Jr., the middle of five children, attended local schools, including Wilson High, and later married another Wilson alumna, Ruth Cartwright. Ruth says they met through mutual friends at a dance hall. They were married 60 years, spending the last 50 in a house in East Long Beach near Colorado Lagoon. Hugh put in 34 years with the Long Beach Fire Department, retiring in 1974 as assistant chief. Along the way, he earned a law degree through a LaSalle University extension program, but never practiced law. He was tapped for the 1976-77 Los Angeles County grand jury, and named foreman after four months. He was on the Long Beach Planning Commission from 1977 until early 1986. He began carving toys a dozen years ago, turning out wooden animals set on wheels, including beavers whose tails swish side to side, fat hippos that yawn, exposing their big bottom teeth, and turtles with heads that bob up and down. He made extra fire trucks for table centerpieces at the LBFD's annual awards banquet. The toys went to local boys and girls who were growing up poor, as Hugh did during the Great Depression. "He never sold a single toy, ever. Even when he was offered a substantial amount of money," his daughter says. "Other people took his toys and sold them -- without permission, and some businessmen from Japan offered him $35 a toy, and kept going up from there. He said absolutely not," Donna says. In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by Donna's husband, Bob Mason; their two sons, Eric Paul and Christopher; Christopher's wife, Karen Mason; and their son, Curtis Mason. Eric Paul lives in Long Beach. The other Masons live in Huntington Beach. Hugh is also survived by his brother, Dan, of Austin, Texas. There will be no services, as Hugh had requested. Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations in Hugh's name to the charity of the donor's choice. on December 16, 2000.2
