Monday at the First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. He died Wednesday at his home. He married Annie Laura Young on Feb. 12, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA. She survives of the home. Others survivors include his children, John, Anita, James, and Judith, 5 sisters, and 1 brother. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Daniel Francis Merriam II. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was a Senior Scientist with the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas. He was educated in the U.S. at the University of Kansas (BS, MS, PhD) with a minor in archaeology and in Europe at the University of Leicester (England) (MSc and DSc). In addition to his research at the KGS, he had worked for Union Oil Company and been a distinguished professor and head of the Department of Geology at Syracuse University and Wichita State University; he was also an Adjunct Professor at Emporia State University (Kansas). Merriam also had been a visiting scientist at Stanford University, Leicester University, Dartmouth College, University of Sydney (Australia), Ecole des Mines (France), and GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (Germany). He was an Honorary Member of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Sedimentary Geology, International Association for Mathematical Geology, Kansas Geological Society, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon; a Senior Fellow of the Geological Society of America and a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He received a gold medal from Hornicka´ P ibram (Czechoslovakia) (1970), appointed to the U.S. National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization by the Secretary of State (1979) awarded the Krumbein Medal from the IAMG (1981), William Smith Medal from the Geological Society of London (1992), and Haworth Distinguished Alumni Honors in Geology from KU (1995) in addition to presidential citations and certificates of recognition, appreciation, or merit from several professional organizations. He had published more than 300 books, scientific articles, and notes mostly on the geology of the U.S. Midcontinent, and Kansas in particular. Most recently he was Historian for the Department of Geology at KU and the Kansas Geological Survey as well as the Historian and Archivist for the IAMG. on April 30, 2017.3

He was born on February 21, 1923, in Pittsylvania County (Danville) Va., the only son of the late Wesley R. And Myrtle Wall Inman. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Young Inman; daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie I. and Ray Snell, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Karen I. And Jim Eggers, of Riner, Va; son and daughter-in-law, M. Lee Inman Jr. and wife, Sonya, of Portsmouth, Va; four grandsons, Michael J. Snell, J. Andrew Eggers, D. Wesley and C. Triston Inman; and two sisters, Ina I. Allen, of Danville, and Martha I. Edwards, of Roanoke. Maynard was a World War II veteran serving as a surgical technician in the United States Army Medical Corps. He attended Schoolfield High School, Averett College and VPI Extension all in Danville, Va. and VPI in Blacksburg. After retiring from a career in sales, he went on to own and operate two businesses, Kandu, in Blacksburg, Va. and Inman's Pipe Shop in Danville, Va. In his younger days he was an active member of the American Legion, serving as Post Commander of Post #3 in Salem, Va. and going on to serve as District Commander and Department Vice Commander. He is currently a member of Post #325 in Danville, Va. Maynard was a faithful member of the Baptist Church for most of his life serving at different times as, Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Church Deacon and Lay Preacher. His final spiritual commitment was at Grace United Methodist Church, joining because of the excellent home ministries provided by the Reverends, E.E. (Dick) Jones and Vern Ferguson. The family would like to thank the many health care professionals at the Salem VA Medical Center (for these past years), and more recently, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Friendship Retirement Community for their kind and compassionate care of Maynard. Floral remembrances will be appreciated or memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 4404 Williamson Road, Roanoke, Va. 24012. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. E.E. (Dick) Jones and the Rev. Vern Ferguson. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 540-366-0707. on March 21, 2008.3

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She was a member of Pilot Methodist Church. She held several offices in the National Ruritan Club. She also served as an officer of the electoral board of Montgomery Co. for many years. She was a long time employee of Pilot Mtn. Grocery, known to many as "Granny". She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Edwin Frank Cole; parents, Kerry Eli and Bertha L. Sutphin; brothers, Frank Sutphin and Ward Sutphin; son-in-law, Jimmy B. Martin; and sisters-in-law, Elsie Sutphin and Mary Cole. She is survived by her son, David Cole and wife, Diane, of Check; daughter, Edwina Martin of Riner; grandchildren, Megan Vaughn (Chase), Jason Cole, Chris Martin (Terri), and Adam Martin; great-grandchildren, Ashlee and Mason; brother, Cecil Sutphin (Margie); brother-in-law, Robert Cole; sister-in-law, Jeaneen Sutphin, along with many other family and friends. Also Special thanks to all those who helped care for Carrie and the Amedisys Hospice team for the exceptional care given during this time. The family will be holding a private graveside service at the Cole Family Cemetery. on April 18, 2020.7
