She had been in failing health for the past 12 years. She was born June 2, 1888, in Whitten Mills, W. Va., a daughter of the late George and Martha Jones. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She leaves her husband, Charles Briggs; one daughter, Mrs. Sadie Putnam of Empire; two sisters, Mrs. N.E. Turley of Steubenville, and Mrs. E.D. Turley of Bluefield, W.Va; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, two sisters, and two brothers. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home in Toronto after 2 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Mr. William Mautz will officiate. Burial will be in Toronto Union Cemetery. on February 23, 1960.3

White, 77, a coal miner, formerly of Steubenville, died at 11 p.m. Friday after an illness of one year. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Putnam of Empire; three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons and two grandchildren. He was born April 20, 1883, in Virginia, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arch White. Friends may call at the Clarke Funeral Home in Toronto after 7 tonight. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. The Rev. Mr. William Mautz will officiate. Burial will be in the Toronto Union Cemetery. (He was actually buried in Osage Cemetery) on August 6, 1960.3

Killed were: George White, 30, of 612 Ross street, Steubenville. Fractured skull. James Risher, 19, of 1313 North River avenue, Toronto. Fractured skull. Injured were: George Sayres, 31, of 612 Ross street, Steubenville. Shattered glass forced into head. Lacerations. Condition serious. Marie Padden, 45, of 612 Ross street, Steubenville. Skull Fractured. Both knee caps fractured. Condition serious. Phyllis Green, 18, of 4401 Huron avenue, Sandusky. Bruises and lacerations. Condition good. Elizabeth Shannon, 40, of 4401 Huron avenue, Sandusky. Body lacerations. Condition good. George E. Dittmore, 33, of 2420 Jacob street, Wheeling. Bruises and minor cuts. Discharged. Louella Coss, 29, of Cadiz pike. Minor cuts. Discharged. White was almost instantly killed in a head-on auto crash on the River road south of Short Creek, Ohio county, W. Va. The accident sent six persons to the Wheeling hospital. The mishap occurred at 1:30 a.m., Sunday. . . . White and the four other persons in the hospital had attended a theatrical performance in Wheeling and were returning to Steubenville when the crash occurred. They were traveling north on the River road while Dittmore, accompanied by Miss Coss, was driving south. The accident took place on the street car crossing, just below Short Creek. State police reported that White was apparently driving to the left of the center of the road and crashed into the Dittmore car in rounding the slight curve. The injured were rushed to the Wheeling hospital by passing motorists. An immediate investigation into the mishap was started by state police . . . George White was born June 24, 1907, in Virginia. He was a produce huckster. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mae White and one son, Raymond. Funeral services for White will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Orland David of 1919 Euclid avenue, Toronto. Burial will be made in Toronto Union cemetery. Rev. Daniel Eynon will officiate. Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel White and one brother, Floyd, of Steubenville. on September 20, 1937.3

Clyde was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Mavis (Braxton County), W.Va., son of the late John Monroe and Lucy Ellen Dunlap Putnam. He is a member of the First Christian Church of Columbiana, Ohio. His other memberships include, Triangle Senior Citizens of Calcutta, Ohio and the Weirton Steel 25-Year Club. Clyde is a veteran of the U.S. Army during W.W. II having served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He is retired from National Steel Corporation, Weirton Steel Division. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sadie M. White Putnam, who passed away in 1990 and whom he married June 23, 1958; step-daughter, Marion Fowler; eight brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Cameron Putnam of the home, whom he married July 30, 1991. Mr. Putnam's five children to a previous marriage are: two sons, Thomas Putnam and wife, Loretta of Barstow, Calif. and Clyde "Eddie" Putnam and wife, Connie of Whittier, Calif; three daughters, Barbara Maxwell and husband, Robert of Columbus, Ohio, Donna Olsen of Marysville, Ohio and Wanda Koski and husband, Richard of Toronto; a brother, Fred Putnam and wife, Blanche of East Liverpool, Ohio; stepson, Rody Exposito and wife, Helen of New Castle, Pa; two step-daughters, Linda Caniff of Edgewater, Fla. and Janet Spooner and husband, Paul of Lakeland, Fla; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Friends and family will gather for visitation today from 4-8 p.m. at the Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main St., Toronto, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, with Minister Len Derico officiating. Burial will follow at the Toronto Union Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the Toronto American Legion. on December 30, 2004.1
