He was preceded in death by an uncle and aunt, Robert Russell and Grace Jamerson Neely. Burial will follow in Beale Presbyterian Church Cemetery. on September 30, 2010.²

He leaves to cherish in his memory two sons, Kevin Elder and his wife Heidi Elder of Forest, Mark Elder and his wife Kendra Elder of Lynchburg. He is survived by five grandchildren, Isaac Elder, Hadley Elder, Celeste Elder, Meadow Elder, and Kaya Atkins. Jimmy is also survived by one sibling, Patricia “Pat” Graham and spouse Kenneth Graham of Kansas City, Missouri.
