Slate police said the mishap occurred at the top of a hill, and the vision of both drivers was impaired by the heavy rain. Rose's daughter, Mrs. W. T. Bailey, Jr., 24, was injured critically while his son-in-law, W. T. Bailey, Jr, 29, and granddaughter, Mary Frances Bailey, 2, suffered minor hurts. Dr. Gore was traveling alone, while Rose and the others were en route from New Hope to Bluefield. Dr. Gore recently was given an honorable discharge from the army. He was surrounded by his five children, his two daughters-in-law, his grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren. Jim was born in Princeton, WV. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Bonnie Lou Pettrey of Prichard, his parents James Oliver Pettrey Sr. and Sybil Pettrey of Princeton, his son-in-law Timothy D. Doss of Fort Gay, and his great-grandson Aidan M. White of Kenova, WV, and a special friend "Little Buddy Sonny" of Prichard. Jim was a giving, loving and devoted family man. He was the chief supervising chemical engineer at AK Steel (Catlettsburg) until he retired and became a consultant for Fosbel until 2016. Jim was a very caring, devoted family man, funny, smart, yet a humble man. He missed his wife more than words can express, and after 19 years, he is finally reunited with Bonnie. Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to become a daddy. There was never a grander man on earth, or a better father. We love you dad, more than we can ever express. Born March 2, 1943 in Pettrey, WV she was the daughter of the late James Oliver Pettrey, Sr. and Sybil Perdue Pettrey. Jerlene was a graduate of Athens High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Concord College. She owned and operated P&H Builders with her late husband Charlie for 37 years before retiring in 2009. Jerlene was an avid WVU and Cincinnati Reds fan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. “Charlie” Harvey, Jr; and one brother, James Oliver “Jim” Pettrey, Jr. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and her cousin and caregiver, Kathy Pettrey of Princeton. Mr. Wiley began his banking career with the Bank of Athens, accepting a position with Mercer County Bank in Princeton, which later became One Valley Bank, where he retired as Vice-President with more than 33 years of service. He was a member of the W.Va. Bankers Association and other professional groups. Gene Wiley was a devoted and dedicated Christian, an active member for many years with the Immanuel Baptist Church on New Hope Road, Princeton. He was serving as the chairman of Deacons, a member of the choir, taught Sunday school, was assistant treasurer of the church, and served on various committees within the church. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Carroll Roberson's Ministries. Mr. Wiley was a member for many years and held various offices for the Gideon's International and the Princeton Camp number 4712. Mr. Wiley was a devoted husband, brother, uncle, and a caring friend to many people. He gave much of his time to others. When time would allow, he loved to garden and was an avid golfer. Lyndall was an active member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Princeton where she previously served as Co-Director of the Children's Church, Church Music Director, Good News Mission/Jail Ministry Volunteer, Assistant Church Pianist and was the Secretary of the Baptist Women. She was also a Committee Member for the Implementation for the Study of the Bible in Mercer County Schools. Lyndall was an excellent cook, enjoyed gardening, staying in top physical condition and was a doting Aunt. Survivors include her loving and caring nieces, Carmela Shires of Alderson, Angela McCallister of Alderson and Valerie L. Honaker of Cary, NC. Great niece and nephew that she deeply adored, Haylee Shires and Tanner McCallister. Special friend, Garnet White of Princeton.      Edna Mae Wiley Edna Wiley Burwell, 88 of Sinks Grove, WV went to live with her Heavenly Father on February 22, 2021. There was certainly a joyful reunion when she was finally able to see her loving husband of 49 years, Roy Samuel Burwell. Born June 29, 1932, in Athens, WV, she was the daughter of the late Marcus and Lois Wiley. Edna was preceded in death by her husband Roy Samuel Burwell; brothers Nace Wiley and Eugene Wiley; sisters Rhonda Hylton and Trixie Long. Survivors include one sister, Polly Plunkett of Sevierville, TN; two brothers, Joe (Genieve) Wiley of Ronceverte, Charlie (Teresa) Wiley of Covington, VA; and sister-n-law Betty Burwell. Four loving children include Freda Bostic (Rick) and Shirley Reed (Raymond), both of Sinks Grove; Roger Cosgro of Thailand; Mark Burwell (Kim) of Harrisonburg, VA. Grandchildren: Stacey Phipps (Jack) of Sinks Grove; Jennifer Hunter (Chris) of Caldwell; Alicia Winters (Billy) of Lewisburg; Nathan Carter (Meredith) of Valdosta, GA; Melissa Griffith (Darren) of Gap Mills; Sam Burwell (Kaity) of Exton, PA; Amy Burwell of Harrisonburg, VA; and Alexander Cosgro of Russia.      Roy Samuel Burwell was buried at New Lebanon Cemetery, Pickaway, Monroe Co., West Virginia.^4,3 He Roy Samuel Burwell, 76, passed away Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Nov. 13, 1922, at Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Harry Harrison and Lotis Ray Burwell. Mr. Burwell was a well known farmer and highly respected member of the community. He retired in 1988 from Allied-Bendix in Baltimore and was member, trustee and elder of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church at Sinks Grove. He was also a charter member of the Bluegrass Ruritan Club, W.Va. 4-H All Stars and co-organizational leader of the Better Builders 4-H Club of Sinks Grove. He was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Lee Burwell. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Edna Wiley Burwell; two daughters, Freda Mae Bostic and her husband, Richard, and Shirley Jean Carter and her husband, Glenn, both of Sinks Grove; two sons, Roy Marcus "Mark" Burwell and his wife, Kim, of Point Pleasant and Roger Malcolm Cosgro and his fiancee, Maria Shevchuk, of Harpers Ferry; five granddaughters, Stacy Carter and her fiance, Roger Bennett, Jennifer Bostic Ratliff and fiancee, Jody Church, Alicia and Missy Bostic and Amy Burwell; two grandsons, Nathan Carter and Samuel Burwell; great-granddaughter Taylor Brook Ratliff; one brother, Granville Burwell and wife, Pauline, of Pickaway; sister-in-law Betty Burwell of Pickaway; and several nieces and nephews.      Charles Frederick "Freddy" Plunkett was born on December 22, 1933 at Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia.^3,4,5 He married Emma Pauline "Polly" Wiley, daughter of Ernest Marcus Wiley and Lois Iola Pardue, on October 11, 1958 at Warm Springs, Bath Co., Virginia.^1,2,3,5 Charles Frederick "Freddy" Plunkett died on February 1, 2016 at Sevierville, Sevier Co., Tennessee, at age 82.⁵ He Charles Frederick "Freddie" Plunkett, 82, of Sevierville, TN, died Thursday, December 1, 2016, at his home after a long illness. He was born December 22, 1933, at Lewisburg, WV, the son of the late Charles Alexander and Violet Evans Plunkett. Freddie loved playing computer games, enjoyed watching movies, and flying model airplanes. He was an affiliation member of Mount Pleasant Community Church in Sinks Grove, WV. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Polly Wiley Plunkett; two sons, Charlie Plunkett and wife, Cindy, of Robbinsville, NC, and Marcus Plunkett and wife, Robin, of Sevierville; one grandson, David Plunkett and wife, Kristy of Sevierville; and two great-grandsons, A.J. and Madison. on December 2, 2016.⁵

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. For 19 years, she worked as a special education instructional aide in Montgomery County elementary schools. She was also an active member of Belmont Christian Church. Trixie was born in Sinks Grove, W.Va. and was preceded in death by her parents, Mark and Lois Wiley; and two brothers, Gene and Nace Wiley. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Sonny, of Radford; her son, John and daughter-in-law, Nicole, of Radford; and her daughter, Tammy and son-in-law, Eric Dunkum of Chesterfield, Va; and her four grandchildren, Hannah, Beth, Jed and Kate. She is also survived by her brothers, Joe Wiley and sister-in-law, Genevieve, of Roncerverte, W.Va., and Charlie and sister-in-law, Theresa Wiley, of Covington, Va; and her sisters, Edna Mae Burwell, of Sinks Grove, W.Va., Rhonda and brother-in-law, Claude Hylton, of White Sulpher Springs, W.Va., and Polly and brother-in-law, Freddy Plunkett, of Seiverville, Tenn. She was also survived by her sisters-in-law, Lyndall Wiley, of Princeton, W.Va., and Audrey Wiley, of Covington, Va. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. on August 8, 2010.³

     Dewey Otis "Sonny" Long was buried at Sunset Cemetery, 501 South Franklin Street, Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.⁴ He was born on June 19, 1950.^2,4 He married Trixie Gayle Wiley, daughter of Ernest Marcus Wiley and Lois Iola Pardue, on February 14, 1970.^1,2,3,4 Dewey Otis "Sonny" Long died on December 8, 2021 at Virginia at age 71.⁴ He Dewey Otis Long Jr., known by everyone as Sonny, of Radford, Va., entered into heaven on December 8, 2021. He was born on June 19, 1950, and grew up in Greenville, W.Va. He met his wife Trixie when they were teenagers, and devoted his life to his family, his church and serving others in Christiansburg, Va. A genuine self-made man, Sonny worked as an electrician before beginning his long career at Wolverine Gasket Company in, Blacksburg, Va., where he started in the maintenance department, was promoted to process engineer, and eventually the plant manager. His co-workers, friends and family often say, "Sonny can fix and build anything." and he enjoyed using his gifts helping out everyone he knew, with his electrical, mechanical and carpentry skills. Sonny was a faithful member of Belmont Christian Church in Christiansburg where he served on many committees and service projects and as a deacon and elder. After his retirement, he was tasked to be the foreman of constructing the new church building Belmont currently uses and was often the one the staff called first when something at the church was broken. When not serving at church, Sonny volunteered his talents on several building sites and in the Restore. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. His passing was preceded by his parents, Dewey "Otis" Long Sr. and Vivian Hedrick Long of Greenville, W.Va., and his wife of 40 years, Trixie Wiley Long of Christiansburg. He is survived by his son, John and daughter-in-law, Nicole, of Radford, Va; his daughter Tammy and son-in-law, Eric Dunkum, of Chesterfield, Va; and his four grandchildren, Hannah, Beth, Jed and Kate. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra and brother-in-law, Dave Dowdy, of Greenville, W.Va; his nephew, TJ Dowdy and his wife, Amy and their sons, Jacob and Ethan, of Cool Springs, W.Va; and former wife, Carol Long of Christiansburg. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. on December 11, 2021.⁴

     Rhonda Louise Wiley was buried at Fairview Christian Church Cemetery, Keenan, Monroe Co., West Virginia.⁶ She was born on January 26, 1943 at Sinks Grove, Monroe Co., West Virginia.^4,6 As of February 24, 1961,her married name was Hylton.⁴ She married Claude Wayne Hylton on February 24, 1961 at Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., Virginia.^1,4,5,7,6 Rhonda Louise Wiley died on September 9, 2018 at age 75.⁶

     Claude Wayne Hylton was buried at Fairview Christian Church Cemetery, Keenan, Monroe Co., West Virginia.^4,6 He was born on October 4, 1927 at Clace, Monroe Co., West Virginia.^2,3,4,6,5 He married Rhonda Louise Wiley, daughter of Ernest Marcus Wiley and Lois Iola Pardue, on February 24, 1961 at Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., Virginia.^1,2,7,4,6 Claude Wayne Hylton died on March 18, 2014 at Fairlea, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, at age 86.^4,6 He Claude Wayne Hylton, 86, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, W.Va., following a long illness. Born Oct. 4, 1927, at Hollywood, W.Va., he was the son of the late S.A. Hylton and Ruth Nicholas Hylton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Melvin and a sister, Mary Carney, nephew, William Hines and paternal grandparents Enos and Mattie Wood Hylton who raised him and his siblings. He was in the Lumber and Grocery business, and a retired employee from the State of West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration. He was a past elder and deacon and a member of First Presbyterian Church in White Sulphur Springs. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rhonda Wiley Hylton; daughter, Nancy Lynn (Mike) Herbst of Virginia Beach, Va; two sons, John Wayne Hylton (Magda) of San Antonio, Texas, and James Lee Hylton (Cindy) of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Genna (Steven) Swartz of Virginia Beach, Va. and Justin Herbst of Virginia Beach, Va., Victoria Hylton of San Antonio, Texas, Nicholas Fogus of White Sulphur Springs, Jeremy Hylton of Morgantown, W.Va. and Isabella Hylton of White Sulphur Springs, he also has four great-grandchildren. He also has a brother Alvin Hylton of White Sulphur Springs and a sister, Dorothy Hines of Lewisburg, W.Va. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery at Keenan. on March 20, 2014.⁴

     George A. Porterfiield was born on January 5, 1869 at Newport, Giles Co., Virginia.² He married Emma Bell Thompson, daughter of James David Thompson and Minnesota S. "Minnie" Vest, on October 19, 1929 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia.¹ George A. Porterfiield died on June 23, 1939 at Blacksburg, Virginia, at age 70.²

"Minnie" Vest, on June 22, 1944 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.^1,4,5,7 Frank Stanford Collier died on March 10, 1988 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 78.^6,2,5 He Frank Standford Collier, 78, of Route 2, Bluefield, died Thursday in a Bluefield hospital. Born in Stonega, Va., he was a son of the late Howard and Sallie Rogers Collier. He was a retired home-improvement contractor and a member of Cumberland Heights Baptist Church. Survivors: wife, Emma B. Thompson Collier; son, Herbert Scott Collier of Bluefield; stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Baldwin of Bluefield; sisters, Mrs. Juanita Clark of California and Mrs. Ruth Walker of Gainesville, Ga; four grandchildren.
