He worked for New River and Pocahontas Coal Company in Minden, W.Va., and Pure Oil Refinery in Cabin Creek, W.Va., before enlisting into the Army. Trained in the horse calvary at Fort Riley, Kan., he saw duty in Italy, Germany, and Austria as a combat engineer. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart, Bronze Indian Arrowhead Medal and a European Theater Ribbon with five battle stars. Upon his return, he resumed his work at Pure Oil Refinery and started night classes at Morris Harvey College. During this time, he met and married Norma Jean Ballard on October 8, 1948. He received his B.S. degree in accounting in 1952 and was the first student to complete all his courses at night. He then worked for FMC Corporation in South Charleston as a registered public accountant until he retired. Hereld was a member of Salina Lodge No. 27, AFM in Malden, W.Va; the York Rite Bodies in Charleston, W.Va; a 33rd-degree Mason of Scottish Rite Bodies in the valley of Charleston, W.Va., where he held leadership positions in all four bodies; Beni Kedem Shrine of Charleston, W.Va. and Royal Order of Jesters Court No, 111. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for sixty years and James Island Presbyterian Church for one year. He is survived by his wife of 59 years of Charleston, S.C; a daughter, Deborah Lynn Lambert, and husband, Paul, of Charleston, S.C; three grandchildren, Dr. Lara Lambert and Paul R. Lambert III, both of Charleston, S.C., and Leslie Lambert of Atlanta, Ga; and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Dahl of Charleston, SC. A memorial service will be held this summer at Virginia's Chapel (Little Brick Church) in Cedar Grove, W.Va. on January 20, 2008.4

Jim was a graduate of Dunbar High School and retired from Union Carbide/Dow Chemical as a lubrications engineer. He started as an operator at SEVIN, and then worked as a pipefitter with the Mechanical Technology Group at Institute before being transferred to the Lubrication Engineering Skill Center in South Charleston. Jr. served honorably for three years in the United States Army. Jim was a beloved son, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all. He leaves behind his son, James R. Settle III and his wife, Jessica, of Warrensburg, Mo; two brothers, Richard and his wife, Pam, of Little River, S.C., and Allen R. of Charleston; sisters, Joann Allen and her husband, Gil, of Topping, Va., Pat Settle and Richard Nelson of Dunbar and Wendy Scites and her husband, Kevin, of Ochlocknee, Ga; and three grandchildren, Josh Settle of Warrensburg, Mo., Kyle Settle of Vacaville, Calif., and Lindsay Despot of Warrensburg, Mo. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. on June 19, 2008.3 He died on July 17, 2008 at West Virginia at age 64.3,6,5
