Born in Fayette County, W.Va. on March 20, 1920, he was the son of the late Lovell M. and Nova Sevy Ashley. He was employed as a property specialist in the Accounting Department at Radford Army Ammunition Plant, where he retired in 1982 with 35 years of service. Mr. Ashley was a veteran of the United States Army in which he served during World War II. For many years he was a member of the Price's Fork United Methodist Church and the Price's Fork Grange #786. Mr. Ashley was also a member of the Hunter's Masonic Lodge No. 156, A.F. & A.M., Blacksburg, the Blacksburg Royal Arch Chapter No. 65, and the Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Roanoke. During his retirement years Mr. Ashley served on the Montgomery County Board of Zoning Appeals and the Board of Equalization. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 38 years, Ruth Smith Ashley; and a sister and brother-in-law, Leona A. and James Bayes. Surviving are his wife, Irene B. Ashley; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Lowell E. Ashley, Christiansburg, David R. Ashley, and Kenneth E. and Jean T. Ashley, all of Roanoke; one daughter and son-in-law, Loretta A. and James E. Foster, Pensacola, Fla; one sister and brother-in-law, Anna A. and Richard H. Stewart, Spotsylvania; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harvey C. Ashley, Hico, W.Va., John R. and Jean Ashley, Dorset, Ohio, and James M. and Virginia G. Ashley, Spotsylvania; two grandsons, Kenneth Gregory and Jason A. Ashley, both of Roanoke; one great-grandson; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. on April 11, 1996.2

Kent, her daughter, Donna M. Kent; and her mother, E. Marie Byrne. Emma is survived by five of her children, Gail Sweeney, Lorraine Swisher (Keith), Wayne Kent, Susan Stone, and Gary Kent (Shannon). She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
