She loved her family and friends and although her health kept her from driving she looked forward to their visits and staying at their homes. She couldn't pass a Goodwill without stopping and mention going to Tennessee and she would beat you to the car. She loved when Christopher came to see his "Nana on the hill" and had her come stay with him so she could go to his ball games and other functions. Konnor brought a twinkle to her eyes when he sat and read to her, made sure her socks and shoes were on and then say "ok great grandma." We would like to thank all Elsie's physicians and staff. A big thank you to the Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley for their loving care this past year. She looked forward to going each work day enjoying the activities, crafts, outings and new friends. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery on Cove Road. on August 24, 2008.¹

     Rellis Myron Palmer Rellis Myron Palmer, 72 of Floyd, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. He was a brick mason for at least 50 years. Rellis loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and he also loved to hunt. Rellis was also quite the jokester. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Drema Palmer; son, Christopher Palmer; and special aunt, Thelma DeHaven. A 58-year-old man from Salem was killed Friday while changing the tire of a Coach America tour bus on southbound Interstate 581 in Roanoke, according to Virginia State Police. The man, whose name hasn't been released, had almost finished changing a flat tire near the Hershberger Road exit about 9:45 p.m. when the jack he was using got stuck, Trooper J.R. Hypes said. The man crawled underneath the bus to get it out, Hypes said. The jack and another part on the bus broke, causing the bus to come down and crush him, he said. The tour bus filled with school-aged children was returning to Greensboro, N.C., after a trip to Washington. When the tire went flat, another bus came to pick the children up so they wouldn't have to wait, Hypes said. There were no passengers on the bus when the incident happened. The man was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. on April 18, 2011.¹⁰ He Woodrow Allen (Woody) Palmer, 58, of Salem, went to his Mountain Home on Friday, April 15, 2011.      Haden Eugene "Gene" Niday Haden Eugene Gene Niday, 73, of Masons Cove, went to his heavenly father on Saturday, November 5, 2022, after a lengthy illness. Born in Craig County, Virginia, on June 18, 1949, to the late Hayden and Tootie Fink Niday, sister, Mary Sissy Davis; brother, Gary Jerry Niday; uncles, Rob Niday and Bulger Niday; aunts, Ruth Wimmer, Elizabeth Huffman, Gertrude Niday, and Maude Mennix; his wifes parents, Glovern and Elsie Palmer, brothers-in-law, Lonnie Palmer and Woodrow Palmer, and sister-in-law, Chekita Young. He is also preceded in death by his stepson, Rellis Phipps; step-grandson, Ryan Palmer. Gene loved being outdoors hunting and fishing and working on cars and trucks. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Roanoke County Schools and was a dedicated employee for over 23 years. Gene adored his family, especially his wife of 46 years, Jeanette, and loved all of the family get-togethers throughout the years. Friends and family found great comfort in his smile. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jeanette Palmer Niday; son, Chris Niday and wife, Dawn; granddaughters, Brittany Phipps and Danielle John and husband, John; grandsons, Shawn Niday, Joshua Niday, Jacob Niday, Cooper Niday; and several great-grandchildren; brothers, Danny Niday, Robert Niday, George Huffman and wife, Bea, as well as a sister, Carolyn Niday. Born and raised on Catawba Mountain, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late, Glovern Hayden Palmer and Elsie Louise Francisco Palmer. She is survived by her daughters, Crystal Gravel (Patrick) and Robin Wickline (Donnie); grandchildren, Konnor, Kyndel, Tabitha and Erin; sisters, Jeanette Niday and Jeanine Horn; brothers, Rellis, Shannon and Wyatt Palmer; sister-in-law, Sarah Palmer; niece, Asiak Young; and longtime friend Dwight Ullery. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lonnie Palmer and Woodrow Palmer. Mrs. Young loved spending time with her grandchildren, Konnor and Kyndel.
