She was born on January 18, 1931 in Akron, daughter to the late William and Clara (Black) Titmas. She earned her Master's degree from the University of Akron and was a few hours shy of her Doctorate. Elizabeth retired from Jackson Schools where she had taught for over 30 years and was an instructor at the University of Akron. Elizabeth was an avid reader, an accomplished swimmer, having earned the title All American Master, she taught swim lessons for over 50 years, and had been a majorette, lifeguard and was a swimming coach and official. Elizabeth kept busy by singing in the church choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, member of Sweet Adelines City of Flags Chorus. She loved family picnics, traveling, quilting, gardening, sewing and being a puppeteer. She was a member of the Lake Cable Garden Club, Red Hat Ladies and was a supporter of the Humane Society and American Red Cross. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Von Smith; second husband, Nick Kakos; third husband, James Schwarz; and daughter, Karen E. Smith. Survivors include her longtime companion, Thomas D. Lilly; daughter, Lynn S. (Thomas) Dean; grandson, Craig V. (Jessica) Dean; two great-grandsons, Thomas J. and Maximus A. Dean; brothers, John (Karin) Titmas, James Titmas and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.      His Social Security Number was 262-09-4422.⁶ Slayton Underhill was born on March 24, 1913 at Saint Davids, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania.^3,4,6,5 He married Barbara Indus Curry, daughter of Charles Theodore Curry and Indus Hushaw, on April 10, 1939 at Manatee Co., Florida.² Slayton Underhill died on October 2, 2002 at Bradenton, Manatee Co., Florida, at age 89.^6,4,5 He BRADENTON -- Slayton Underhill, the artist known as the “Master of the Hat” for advertisements featuring fedora-wearing models like Douglas Fairbanks and Bing Crosby, died Wednesday at Blake Medical Center. He was 89. Born March 24, 1913, near Philadelphia, Underhill studied at Yale University before moving to New York in the 1940s to work as an illustrator. He later turned to expressionist art, and continued painting until just before he died. Underhill’s early works appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Collier’s and Life. Two of his portraits were chosen for covers of Time magazine. He also tried his hand at photography. The artist behind advertising campaigns for Viceroy cigarettes and Lincoln and Mercury cars, Underhill earned the nickname “Master of the Hat” after a campaign for Stetson. Many of his models were people he knew, including his wife, Barbara, who became known as “The Lincoln Girl.” Slayton Underhill, a nationally recognized illustrator, died Wednesday in Bradenton. After many of the magazines he worked for folded, he turned to painting, but was not as successful. “A New York gallery agreed to show the 20 paintings I had produced in 1960. None sold. It was hopeless,” Underhill wrote in a statement for a 1999 exhibit. He was described in the New York Herald-Tribune by art critic Emily Genauer as “fascinating, not saddened by the processes of life.” To make money, he returned to the careful skill of painting people. He “detested” those who hired him, he told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in 1998. “I couldn’t understand why people wanted to see themselves pictured on their walls,” he said. He continued the practice after moving to Bradenton with his wife in 1968 so they could be near her ailing mother. Four of his pictures still hang in the Florida Supreme Court building in Tallahassee. Two are portraits of former justices Glenn Terrell and Fred Karl. Across the street, his paintings of former Florida governors Farris Bryant and Spessard Holland hang in the historic Old Capitol. After Barbara’s mother died, the couple moved to Wilmington, N.Y., near the Adirondack Mountains, but returned to Bradenton in 1989. After his wife died in 1994, Slayton turned his artistic attention to dragons and monsters to express his grief and to illustrate Barbara’s battle with cancer. The two had been married since 1939, three years after they met in Paris. Many of his paintings still hang in his apartment at Freedom Village, a director said. Survivors include a son, Slayton Jr. of Port Henry, N.Y., and a nephew, Slayton Altenburg of Tamaqua, Pa.      Leona Mae Dalton was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁵ She Leona Morris (Dalton) - Leona passed away peacefully at Salem Terrace Assisted Living on Tues, September 15, 2020. She was a lifelong resident of Roanoke and Salem, growing up in the Garden City community where she attended William Byrd High School and played girls basketball. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Katie Rose Dalton; her sister, Evelyn Pawnee Proctor; her former husband, H.H. (Bill) Morris, Jr; and her long-time special friend, Cline Wood. Leona is survived by her daughters, Carol Morris Shifflett of Salem, and Rita Morris Jenkins (John) of Grandy, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Angela Shifflett Daniel (Jerry) of Salem, Trey Shifflett of Salem, and Brian Jenkins (Meredyth) of Richmond, Va. Great-Grandchildren surviving her are Jacob, Lin, and Heidi Daniel; Kaylee and Kennedi Shifflett; Adeline, Josephine, and Dylan Jenkins. Leona spent much of her life caring for her home and family. She loved working in her yard and flower gardens; her poinsettias were car-stoppers. She loved caring for her beloved dogs and cat. She was an amazing seamstress, making draperies and curtains and much of her and her daughters’ clothes. She was also a great cook, loving to prepare meals for her family. No one will forget her Mac & Cheese. Later in life, Leona worked at Southwest VA Savings and Loan in Salem. She loved to travel with friends and took up ballroom dancing, traveling for competitions. While at Salem Terrace, Leona would play piano for residents, both hymns and jazz from memory. She also took painting classes, leaving her family with many beautiful sceneries. Our family would like to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to the entire staff at Salem Terrace at Harrogate Assisted Living where she lived for the past five years, especially the Dogwood Memory Care staff who cared for her the last 3 years. Thank you for your loving care, your teasing and joking, and your patiences with her hard-headedness. We also want to thank the wonderful, loving staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice who cared for our mom this year and kept us in touch with her during Covid-19 through regular FaceTime visits.      James Jerden "Jim" Havens was buried at Claremont Cemetery, Stratton, Kit Carson Co., Colorado.^3,4 He Longtime Stratton resident, James (Jim) Jerden Havens, 93, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2015 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. Jim was born June 26, 1922. He was one of five children born to Elmer and Alice (Dillon) Havens in Kirk. He attended country school through the 10th grade at which time he left school to help on the family farm during difficult times. Jim entered the Army on June 30, 1945 and served until Nov. 27, 1946. Jim was a member of the Stratton American Legion for 69 years. On Sept. 8, 1962 Jim was married to the love of his life, Mary. Jim helped raise two step-children, Patricia D. and Edward L. Parker III. To this union, one daughter, Penni Lynn was born. Jim was a longtime heavy equipment operator at the Kit Carson County Road and Bridge. After his retirement from the county, Jim found it hard to sit still and be a homebody, so he took a job at the Stratton Landfill. He enjoyed driving activity trips for Stratton Schools, where fond memories and bonds were created with the young men he was able to watch grow. Jim lived a very social life and loved people. He loved playing cards with friends, dancing, card parties and visiting with friends and family. For most of his life, Jim could also be found around the round table at the local coffee shop in the mornings. Penni remembers having milk and coffee, while the grandchildren have fond memories of enjoying hot chocolate with Grandpa. One of his passions was breeding and raising registered quarter horses, which he enjoyed well into his 80s. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing that passion with his children and grandchildren, even naming a colt after each grandchild. He loved his family dearly. Whether he took an opportunity to sit down and visit over a cup of coffee, or teach someone how to play cribbage, Jim loved life and everyone in it. Jim was very involved in his grandchildren's lives. Whether it was a ball game, dance recital, band concert, or any other activity, you could be assured Jim would be in attendance. In Jim's later years, he looked forward to getting together with friends several times a week and playing cribbage, which kept his mind sharp. Jim is preceded in death by his wife Mary, parents, in-laws Buck and Evelyn Wright, brother Don and wife Lee, brother Ralph and wife Pat, sister Virginia and husband Lloyd, brother-in-law George Ausmus, and great-grandson Tanner Seelhoff. Jim is survived by daughter Penni Fox and husband Don of Stratton, Patty Peterson of Florida, and Ed Parker of Fort Morgan. Memorial services for Jim were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Love Funeral Home in Burlington, with Charlie May officiating.
