He was a graduate of Beckley High School in Beckley, W.Va. He received a bachelor of science degree from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va; and a master's degree from Shippensburg (Pa.) College. He taught school for 35 years at Washington Street School and Western Heights Middle School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and retired from the Naval Reserve in 1985 as a chief aviation ordinanceman. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a member of Washington County Teachers Association; AARP; and VP 68 Plank Holder Black Hawks. He is survived by his wife, Frances Faith Paris; a daughter, Rebecca J. Lohr of Hagerstown; three sons, S. Thomas Paris of Owings Mills, Md., Robert L. Paris of Rockhill, S.C. and Timothy L. Paris of Frederick, Md; four granddaughters and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warden Thomas Paris. Services will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown. The Revs. Patrick Pierce and Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.5

     Harry Willard Riggs was buried at Batavia Cemetery, Batavia, Jefferson Co., Iowa.1,2 His Social Security Number was 547-24-6973.4 He was born on June 11, 1916 at Udell, Appanoose Co., Iowa.1,2,3,4 He married Katherine MacKenzie Crawford, daughter of Harry Marshall Crawford and Elizabeth McKenzie Book, on February 10, 1940 at Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., California.1,2 Harry Willard Riggs died on December 13, 2008 at Bettendorf, Scott Co., Iowa, at age 92.1,2,4 He Harry W. Riggs age 92 formerly of Fairfield died Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the Bettendorf Health Care Center in Bettendorf where he had been a resident since August, 2007. Visitation will be from 11 A.M. until Noon on Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield followed by a graveside funeral at 12:30 P.M. at the Batavia Cemetery at Batavia. Funeral services conducted by Pastor Suzy Swahn. A memorial service will be at a later date in Fairfield. Harry was born June 11, 1916 in Udell, Iowa, the son of Roscoe and Oshia WOOD RIGGS. In 1934 after graduation from Lockridge High School, he entered the U.S. Navy. During his four year enlistment he was assigned to the U.S.S. Arizona, U.S.S. California and the U.S.S. Pennsylvania. After his four year enlistment he remained in California. He married Katherine Mac Kenzie CRAWFORD on February 10, 1940, in the First Christian Church in Long Beach, California. Harry worked at Vultee Aircraft, Bethlehem Steel and the Long Beach Navy Yard. In 1944 he attended the Alameda, California Merchant Marine Officers Training School where he graduated with a Second Mates License and served on merchant ships during World War II. Afterwards, he obtained his Unlimited Masters License and continued serving on ocean going vessels until 1955. At this time he and his family moved to Fairfield, Iowa to engage in farming, although he never lost his love of the sea and could recount every detail of his experiences. After the death of his wife in 2002, he moved to Bettendorf, then to Houston, Texas and then back to Bettendorf. Harry was a member of the First Christian Church in Fairfield where he had served as a trustee and deacon; the Fairfield Lions Club; Jefferson County Farm Bureau; the U.S.S. Reunion Association, Soil Commissioner; and Cedar Township Trustee. He is survived by his sons: Charles Roscoe (Ruby) RIGGS of Sugar Land, Texas; Wayne Marshall RIGGS of Raleigh, North Carolina; two daughters: Barbara K. Mac KENZIE of San Diego, CA and Dorothy E. (Douglas) McNAMER of Bettendorf, Iowa; six grandchildren: Tanya (RIGGS) TAYLOR of Houston, TX; Angela (RIGGS) BENEDICT of Van Couver, Oregon; Christophe JOURIER of Halifax, Nova Scotia; Karin (KILINGER) BENEDICT of Winona, Minnesota; Kim (KLINGER) HERR of Clarksville, TN; and Charles KLINGER of Bettendorf, IA; 3 stepgrandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and 3 sisters: Ruth WILSON of Rogers, Arkansas; Charlotte KLISE of Wakarusa, Kansas and Shirley (Gene) FREEMAN of Bettendorf, IA; 2 brothers Jerry (Ruth) RIGGS of Amana, IA and James (Rose) RIGGS of Des Moines, IA. In addition he has a host of nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife on January 8, 2002, who was the love of his life; his parents, one brother Wayne, killed in World War II, and one sister Vera WHITMORE. The family would like to thank Dr. Andy Edwards and the entire staff of Bettendorf Healthcare Center for everything they have done for our loved one. on December 15, 2008.2

     Dorothy Virginia Crawford was born on March 2, 1923 at Norfolk, Virginia.1 As of October 24, 1942,her married name was Glittone.2 She married Vito Glittone on October 24, 1942 at Portsmouth, Virginia.2 Dorothy Virginia Crawford and Vito Glittone were divorced on November 15, 1947 at Norfolk, Virginia.5 As of March 21, 1948,her married name was Hutchinson.2 Dorothy Virginia Crawford married Edward Stanley Hutchinson III on March 21, 1948 at Norfolk, Virginia.2 Dorothy Virginia Crawford died on November 16, 2008 at Virginia Beach, Virginia, at age 85.3,6 She VIRGINIA BEACH - Dorothy Virginia Hutchinson, 85, died Nov. 16, 2008, in Virginia Beach. A Portsmouth native, raised in Long Beach, Calif., returning to Portsmouth in 1940, she lived in Portsmouth, Norfolk and Virginia Beach the remainder of her life. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Crawford Sugden and Harry Marshall Crawford formerly of Portsmouth. She was church secretary at Old Donation Episcopal Church for nine years and a teacher with the Headstart Program for 20 years, teaching both in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. During World War II, she worked as a riveter at Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, Calif., at the Naval Ammunition Depot, St. Juliens Creek (Virginia), and at National Airlines following the end of the war. She is survived by two sons, David E. Hutchinson and John C. Hutchinson; two grandchildren, Evan C. Hutchinson and Bernadette L. Hutchinson; her daughter-in-law and friend, Meredith J. Hutchinson; brother-in-law, Harry W. Riggs in Bettendorf, Iowa; and four nieces and nephews, Charles and Wayne Riggs, Barbara McKenzie and Dorothy McNamer. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 30, at 4 p.m. in Old Donation Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, (757) 497-0563 with Father Bob Randall and Elizabeth Fellicetti officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Old Donation Church's Outreach Programs or to donor's choice. From son John: Beloved Mother and Grandmother who was each in her day, a spirited bohemian and social firebrand, open-minded and open-hearted, loving much and much loved, champion always of the oppressed, student always of the heart, supporter always for the principles of "truth and justice for all." Her light was warm, steady and bright. Her spirit loving and humble. She touched the lives of many with her nurturing and acceptance. Her mind was still inquiring to her last day.
