Cannaday, all of Merietta, Georgia, and Iva Michele King of Fairfax, Va; a niece, Luci Anderson Graham of Roanoke, Va; and a hosts of nieces and nephews, all who are out of the area. Mrs. Whitenack was co-owner of two grocery stores-Shopwell on Brambleton Ave. and Brandon Road Market founded By Woody Angle and Harry Cannaday, known as "Angle & Cannaday". She was also in sales at Tower's Hallmark Gift Shop, Tanglewood Leggett's China Dept., and Village Gift Shop at Cave Spring. She was on the debate team and the basketball team at Check High School. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Interment will immediately follow at Evergreen Burial Park. on June 4, 2004.2

Mr. Saunders retired in 1985 as the Post Master of Roanoke after 37 years with the United States Postal Service. In 1974, he became the first non-political Post Master appointed in Roanoke and was also a Sectional Center Manager. His territory was the largest in the Eastern Region, covering over 17,000 square miles and including over 242 post offices from Appomatox to the Kentucky boarder. James was a dedicated husband, father and friend and was committed to community service. He was a past President of the Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lion's Club and past member of the Roanoke Valley Torch Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William I. Saunders, of Roanoke and a brother, Robert S. Saunders of High Point, N.C. Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Jean Martin Saunders, his children, John H. Saunders and his wife, Laurie, Roanoke, Jane S. Miller and her husband Eric of Montvale; five grandchildren, Ann-Henley Saunders, J. Martin Saunders, Edwin C. Saunders, E. Apr 1, 1940 - Nov 24, 2025. Carolyn Jo Martin McCorkindale, of Roanoke, passed peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2025. She was born in Roanoke, VA, in 1940 to Howard and Dorothy Martin. Carolyn was a graduate of Radford University and Virginia Tech, majoring in Business Education. Carolyn enjoyed a long career in teaching and business education and was a co-owner of a small business for 15 years. She started her career as a high school teacher and taught business courses at five area colleges over the years. She continued her business education career as an entrepreneur mentor at a local non-profit. She ended her career as the executive director of a business incubator in southwestern Virginia. During her retirement, Carolyn devoted many years to serving her church as clerk. She was a vibrant and enthusiastic individual and was a wonderful mother to her children. She loved her extended family and fondly recalled her time with her many cousins in Floyd County, where she spent much time at her grandparents’ farms. She enjoyed quiet contemplation time at her home, surrounded by trees. A lover of old-time music, such as Ralph Stanley, especially the a cappella Primitive Baptist tradition in which she grew up. Carolyn’s passing was preceded by her parents, Howard and Dorothy Martin. Her surviving family includes her son, Matthew McCorkindale, of Roanoke, VA; daughter, Mary Catherine McCorkindale and son-in-law, Stephen O’Leyar, of Fairport, NY; her granddaughter, Caitlin O’Leyar, of Fairport, NY; and sister, Jean Saunders of Roanoke, VA.4 She was born on April 1, 1940 at Roanoke, Virginia.6,4 As of June 16, 1962,her married name was McCorkindale.2 She married Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale on June 16, 1962 at Roanoke, Virginia.2 Carolyn Jo Martin and Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale were divorced on November 19, 1997 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.3 Carolyn Jo Martin died on November 24, 2025 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 85.4

     Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale Jeffrey A. (Jeff) McCorkindale, of Roanoke, passed on Wednesday, August 7, 2019. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Simpson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Robert Brodie and Rev. Rod Longmire. Jeff was born July 5, 1937, and was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm and Mary McCorkindale, and brother James McCorkindale. He is survived by his daughter Mary Catherine McCorkindale and son-in-law Stephen O’Leyar, and son, Matthew McCorkindale. Also surviving is his granddaughter Caitlin O’Leyar. Jeff lived a life of service through his public and private vocations. He had a long career in security and criminal justice as a polygraph examiner, forensic document examiner and security consultant. In addition, he served as a Roanoke Auxiliary Police Officer for 21 years. Having served in the US army briefly after high school, in later years he joined the Virginia Defense Force (State Guard), attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He took great pleasure in military traditions and camaraderie and the opportunity to serve his state. Jeff practiced his strong Christian faith through community ministry including serving as a Church of the Brethren interim pastor in Goode, Virginia for 5 years. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, he performed in multiple musicals and as a church soloist. He most enjoyed time with family and friends, reading, crossword puzzles, and painting.2 He was born on July 5, 1937 at Watertown, Codington Co., South Dakota.1,2 He married Carolyn Jo Martin, daughter of Howard Lawrence Martin and Dorothy Ora Cole, on June 16, 1962 at Roanoke, Virginia.1 Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale and Carolyn Jo Martin were divorced on November 19, 1997 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.3 Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale died on August 7, 2019 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 82.2
