Dorothy Lee Moore was buried at New Weston Cemetery, Weston, Wood Co., Ohio.3,2 She was born on March 11, 1927 at Wickham, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1,3,2 As of May 15, 1943,her married name was Cook.1 She married Kenzie Elmer Cook II, son of Kenzie Elmer Cook Sr. and Lena Annie Spangler, on May 15, 1943 at Piney View, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1,4,2 Dorothy Lee Moore died on May 30, 1984 at Bowling Green, Wood Co., Ohio, at age 57.3 She Mrs. Cook, the former Dorothy Lee Moore, was a housewife and attended the Weston Assembly of God Church. She was born March 11, 1927 in Wickham, W.Va., to Mr. and Mrs. George W. Moore (Cora Taylor). She married Kenzie E. Cook Jr. May 15, 1943 in Beckley, W.Va. The family has lived in Wood County 33 years. Surviving Mrs. Cook are her husband; three sons, Warren J., Roger D. and Kenzie E. III, all of Bowling Green; a daughter, Mary E. Souvenier, Weston; two sisters, Mary Richards and Georgia Keller, and four brothers, William, Alonzo, John and Clarence, all of Beckley, W.Va; and seven grandchildren. A joint funeral service will be held Saturday. Burial will be in Weston Cemetery. on May 31, 1984.2 She Wood County sheriff's deputies still are trying to piece together the events leading up to the tragic shooting deaths of three persons Wednesday night. The sheriff's department is still going on the supposition of Dr. Roger Peatee, Wood County coroner, that it was a double homicide and suicide. The supposition is that Robert W. Stephenson, 35, of 7593 S. Dixie Highway, Cygnet, fatally shot Mrs. Dorothy Moore Cook, 57, and her daughter, Adina Ann Smith, 23, both of 15506 Green Road, before turning the gun on himself. Stephenson and Adina Smith had dated at one time, but the relationship apparently was broken off recently by the woman. Charles Frizzell, sheriff's detective, theorized that Stephenson went to the Cook house with one thing in mind. Frizzell believes Adina Smith was "definitely afraid" of Stephenson, who was released from the Marine Corps on June 25, 1969, under an undesirable discharge. She had stopped at the sheriff's department on Wednesday, May 23, one week before she was killed. At that time, according to Frizzell, she informed deputies that Stephenson about two weeks earlier "had thumped on her with a gun" and had shot into the door of her auto. That gun apparently was returned to the seller sometime later. The caliber of that weapon has not been determined, Frizzeil said, but it was not the 44-caliber, six-shot Magnum which apparently was used in the triple deaths. The Magnum and ammunition for it were purchased at a gun store the afternoon of the shootings, the same day that Stephenson reportedly sold his Malibu station wagon to a man named "Garner" for about $350. Frizzell said that Adina was told by deputies she should contact the prosecuting attorney and file charges after she told them of the shooting incident. "She didn't want to do that. She said all she wanted to do was tell us what had happened. "I think she was afraid of him, afraid of what he might do if she filed charges. "We made out a general offense report and she must have been satisfied," the detective said. Frizzell said that it still is unknown how Stephenson got to the Cook home on Green Road the night of the shootings. "We do know that a friend or someone gave him a ride earlier in the evening (Wednesday) to the east side of Bowling Green about 7:30. He gave the person $5 for giving him the ride." Frizzell said his department now believes that once Stephenson got to the Cook home, he waited for Adina to return to the house. Adina and her mother had been to the Croll-Wright Funeral Home in Grand Rapids to pay respects to Terry Fletcher, who had been a former neighbor on Green Road. Adina was dropping off her mother, then was going to leave for work at the Cooper Industrial Products, where her shift began at 11 p.m. Frizzell said it appeared that Mrs. Cook had gotten out of her daughter's auto and walked to the front door to enter the house. At that moment, Stephenson probably, shot Adina twice, once the right shoulder and once in the head, as she sat in her auto. Mrs. Cook, hearing the shots, probably turned toward the driveway to investigate and also was shot in the head. Frizzell said her keys to house were found between the entrance door and the storm door, the door still locked. Frizzell said the six rounds in the gun were fired. Four of the rounds have been accounted for. According to service records, Stephenson was given his undesirable discharge from the Marine Corps in June 1969. His rank was listed as Pvt.E-1 and the discharge was signed by W.F. Gross, Chief Warrant Officer, United States Marine Corps. Sheriff's records show Stephenson had been booked into the Wood County Jail several years ago on a disorderly conduct charge, the only entry on an admittance card bearing his name. Municipal Court records show Stephenson had 11 charges on file in the period between 1967 and 1977, eight of those traffic related. The three non-traffic charges, all misdemeanors, were child stealing in 1977; breaking and entering, reduced to a misdemeanor in 1971; and a wildlife violation in 1969. on June 1, 1994.5
