He served with the 101st Airborne and the 7th Special Forces 187th Regimental Combat for three years and later retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 total years of honorable service. Following his military service he was employed with Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C. until his retirement. Surviving are wife, Virginia Sumner Barnard of the home; one step-son, Jeffery L. Jinnett and wife Barbara of Knoxville, TN; three step-daughters, Jaki J. Day and husband Bruce of Rome, Ga., Robin J. Porter and husband Clyde of Fairfax, Va. and Jill J. Daniel and husband Steve of Reidsville, N.C; one brother, Weldon Barnard of Reidsville, N.C; three sisters, Ramona B. Southard of Reidsville, N.C., Linda B. Land of Stoneville, N.C. and Nancy B. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Marion C. Sumner; a son, Erwin C. Sumner; and seven sisters. Mrs. Sumner was a member of Basham Primitive Baptist Church for 70 years. She was employed by American Viscose Corporation for many years and was also employed by the Roanoke County School System, from which she retired. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Ruby Sumner; a daughter-in-law, Donna Sumner; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Gilmer and Ruby Walters, both of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted in Basham Primitive Baptist Church on Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 11 a.m. by Elder Lane Carter. Interment will follow in Basham Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Funeral service will be on Saturday, January 1, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Henry, Virginia officiated by Elder Junior Conner. Burial will immediately follow at the Town Creek Cemetery. on December 31, 2021.3

Kimball was a former Lynchburg Police Officer, a former employee of General Electric, Whitten Funeral Homes, and the owner and operator of Kimball’s Restaurant. He was of Baptist faith. In 1951, after four and one-half years of military service, including serving aboard the USS Ticonderoga during World War II, Kimball joined the Lynchburg Life Saving Crew and rose through the ranks of the crew, holding offices of sergeant, 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant, and captain. In addition, he held the office of chief (captain) for 18 years and in 1985 was elected chief emeritus. During his career, Kimball responded to wrecks, floods, fires, and other assorted disasters. The greatest disaster Kimball worked was as the result of Hurricane Camille in 1969. Kimball was in charge of search, rescue, and recovery. Kimball spent three and one-half weeks working on the rescue efforts of this natural disaster. For this sacrifice, he received a letter of commendation from President Richard M. Nixon. Kimball was inducted into the Virginia Life Saving and Rescue Hall of Fame in September 1989. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Stockton Glass and Walter Glass and one sister, Katherine Glass Smith. Kimball is survived by three daughters, Sharon Ann Newton of Lompoc, Calif., Carey Lynne Lansing of Fairfax, and Susan Earle Glass of Lynchburg; two sisters, Mary Sue Glass Alfonso of Dunwoody, Ga., and Carolyn Glass Shore of Charlotte, N.C., five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his former wife and friend, Pauline Glass of Lynchburg; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Thomas Road Baptist Church by Dr. Jerry Falwell. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
