Arlen Ira Whiteman Runs Him Sr. Arlen Ira Whiteman Runs Him, Sr. passed away Oct. 3, 2009 in the Crow Agency Indian Health Service Hospital. Biakeesh (Gives Away Woman), a name given to him by Charlie Ten Bear, was born July 8, 1936 in Crow Agency to Arlis Whiteman Runs Him and Ada Chatham. His grandparents John and Amy Yellowtail Whiteman raised him. He grew up and attended schools in Lodge Grass, graduating from Lodge Grass High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Kaisenslakuteen, Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1958 and upon returning home, he met and married Michaelene (Mickey) Doyle on April 3, 1959. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They made their home in Lodge Grass until 1970, when they moved to Crow Agency. They had five children, Arlen Jr., Gary, Desiree, Tara and Charles. Arlen worked for the BIA Roads Department for many years and also for the Sarpy, Big Horn and Spring Creek Coal Mines. He loved rodeo, whether participating in it or watching it on TV. In his younger days, he was a bull dogger, saddle bronc rider and did some bull riding. He enjoyed watching rodeo on TV, watching bull riding every chance he got, until his final days. He loved working on cars, especially Fords and was always fixing one up for somebody. He was passionate about Crow Tribal issues and wanted what was best for the Crow people. He picked up leather working as a hobby and made beautifully worked and painted billfolds, checkbook holders and barrettes for his children and grandchildren. His many illnesses never stopped him nor slowed him down. In his later years, his greatest enjoyment and treasure were his grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially his grandson Jake. His father, grandparents John and Amy, aunt Minnie Ellen Fritzler, sisters Estelle (Cubby) Whiteman and Emma Guardipee and his youngest brother Wendell Arnold preceded Arlen in death. He is survived by his wife Mickey; his five children Arlen Jr. (Mona), Gary (Mary), Desiree, Tara and Charles; his grandchildren Stephanie, Damian (Veronica), Jake, Tawny (Ryan), Jade, Mariah, Kaya, Nacoma and Calvin; his great grandchildren; Celeste and Anthony (Tony); his mother; sisters Arlene (Randy) Carpenter, Adabelle Arnold, Joann Pipe, Elizabeth (Keith) Reece, Karen, Judy (Larry) Morrison and Leah; his brothers Charles “Bunny” (Janice) Wilson, Gary (Colleen) Gordon, Thomas “Butch” (Ann), Vernon (Gail), John (Mary Ann) and Douglas (Carole) Arnold; his aunt Louella Johnson; his uncle Joseph Medicine Crow; his brothers-in-law Mervyn Haven, Tim and John Doyle; his sisters-in-law Deanna Dreamer, Louise Doyle and Penny Bad Bear; many cousins, nieces, nephews and a large extended family including the Yellowtail and Whiteman Runs Him families; and special friends Barry and Daniel Bad Bear. Arlen’s family extends a special thanks to Dr. Robert Wilson and the Crow I.H.S. Hospital, who so diligently took care of Arlen throughout his illness and also became a valued friend. Visitation was held Oct. 5 in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Cremation followed the visitation. Memorial services will be held at a later day. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.2
