Phyllis Doreen Lewis1

F, b. February 24, 1919, d. October 20, 2011
Phyllis Doreen Lewis was buried at Stearns Cemetery, Muncie, Vermilion Co., Illinois.1,2 She was born on February 24, 1919 at Leominster, Herefordshire, England.1,2 As of 1973,her married name was Trimmell.1 She married Clyde Virgil Trimmell, son of Ross Trimmell and Goldie Jessie "Sadie" Amos, in 1973.1 Phyllis Doreen Lewis died on October 20, 2011 at Tulsa, Tulsa Co., Oklahoma, at age 92.1,2 She MUNCIE, Ill. – Phyllis Doreen Trimmell passed away on Oct. 20, 2011, due to a stroke. A longtime resident of Muncie, Ill., she was living in Catoosa, Okla., in order to be near her son Eric Johnson and his wife. She was born in Leominster, Herefordshire, England, on Feb. 24, 1919, to George and Edith Ellen (Postons) Lewis. She had an older brother and a younger sister, Edwin (called Ted) and Margaret. She was a member of the Church of England. Her father passed away suddenly when Phyllis and her siblings were very young and her mother worked as a hostess and caterer at a local restaurant to support her children. As a child, Phyllis enjoyed playing field hockey; sneaking downstairs early in the morning after the milk delivery to drink the cream out of the tops of the bottles; and flirting with the boys. Her sister Margaret was her biggest rival in this last pursuit. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort by working in an aerial bomb assembly plant where she put the marker smoke component into the bombs. On the way home from work one day, she was strafed by a German fighter plane and vaulted over a stone wall to take cover. The plane flew so close that she could clearly see the swastika on the tail 30 feet overhead. Along with her countrymen, she endured many hardships during the war and recalled that if not for the vegetables in her mother's garden, the family might have gone hungry. But there were many happy times, too. She attended many local parties and danced with the American GIs stationed at a nearby air field and Army hospital. One night at a local pub, she met an American sergeant, Ralph Johnson. They married on July 4, 1945. After the war was over, she traveled to the U.S. to join her new husband, leaving her family and everything she had ever known, for love. Phyllis enjoyed life. She especially loved flowers and gardening, her home in Muncie, and her many friends. She lived by these maxims: "When all else fails, stick a flower on it," and "Never spend a dime when a nickel will do." She loved a good cup of hot tea, hot gossip and crossword puzzles. She was a great cook and often spoiled her husband and two sons by baking them each a personal pie. She loved to paint and created many artworks that are treasured by her family and friends. She was a loving mother, dutiful wife, excellent homemaker, and a good and faithful caregiver to her friends and relatives. Phyllis became a citizen of the United States in the 1960s but she never forgot her English roots and kept a British Union Jack flag on her wall and always loved the Royal Family. She hated lightning, thunder, red meat and hot dogs. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Edith Lewis; her brother, Edwin Lewis; her first husband and the love of her life, Ralph Bantz Johnson; her second husband, Clyde Virgil Trimmell; her eldest son and constant source of pride, Lewis George Johnson; her daughter-in-law, Linda Clouse Johnson; and her beloved tuxedo cat, Sid. She is survived by her youngest son, Eric Ralph Johnson (Rhonda) of Tulsa, Okla; her stepson, Ross Trimmell (Jenny) of Danville; her granddaughters, Heidi Warren (Ross) of Philo and Brandy Ryan (Jim) of Monticello; and by her sister, Margaret Lewis Pinches of Leominster, Herefordshire, England. Phyllis will be interred in Stearns Cemetery, Muncie, Ill., with her first husband, Ralph. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23. Her grateful family wishes to extend many thanks to all of you who knew Mom and treated her so well. on June 20, 2012.1
