He had fought a long battle with acute leukemia. Toby was born in Greensboro, NC and was raised by his parents Lawrence and Oney C. Straughn. He was one of twelve children. He attended Bessemer High School in Greensboro, NC. His talents afforded him the ability to build and design. If he could incorporate recycled or natural materials and mix his own concrete, he was a happy man. He loved to entertain the masses at his son Tony's barn dance venue, The Barn Dance, in Julian, NC and at Wayne Mosely's club, Larry J's, in Ridgeway, VA. He would dress up in comical character costumes at the events, always feeding on the excitement from the crowd. His personality gravitated people to him, never meeting a stranger. A quote that would best describe his life, "No man is a failure who has friends." He will be greatly missed by all but never forgotten. Preceding him in death are his parents, sisters, Doris Calahan, Mary Clopton, and Patsy Straughn; brothers: Augustus "Gut," Curtis, and Clay Straughn; a nephew, Ronald Clopton; and grandson, Jacob "Jake" Straughn. He is survived by his wife Mary Reterstoff Straughn; his sons, Lawrence (Becky) Straughn of Jamestown, Tony (fiancée Kim) Straughn of Julian, Michael Straughn of Burlington, and daughter, Amanda Straughn, of Columbia, SC, two granddaughters April Straughn and Heather (Ricky) Riley, and a grandson, Jonathon Straughn, and two great-granddaughters Hadley and Kylee Carnes. Lobdell, of Greensboro. His wife would like to express her appreciation to Dr. Rupali Roy Bahave, her team, and the 3rd floor supportive care groups at the Hematology & Oncology Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, NC and Hospice of Rockingham County. A graveside will be conducted by Rev. Brooks Graebner and Rev. Roy Frazier at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Hillsborough, NC. on February 19, 2021.4
