He was identified as Joseph Woodrow Hazlewood, resident at the North View Addition of Princeton. Magistrate Dean C. Coffey, Justice of Peace and coroner, said the death was apparently natural as the body had only one small bump on the head, believed to have occurred when Hazelwood fell to the ground. Aside from a small bump on the head which might have resulted from the fall, police said there were no other marks on the body. There were no sign of any struggle near the body and no indication of a hit-and-run accident. Apparently Hazelwood was walking toward Athens when he fell. The body was brought to Memorial Hospital in a Memorial Funeral Directory ambulance. He was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Daniel Hale. A billfold containing miscellaneous papers and $55 was found in the dead man's pants pocket. Leonard Christian of Beckiey driving toward Princeton, first discovered the body and stopped Charley Bassett, chief at the Mercer County Jail, who was on his way to work. Bassett stopped at the Police Headquarters and notified Night Desk Sergeant Carlysie Thom who sent Patrolmen Joe Thorn and Guy Harmon to the scene. The body was taken to Memorial Funeral Directory. Hazelwood had been employed at the Giles French sawmill for the past nine years. Born at Elgood on March 13, 1913, he was a son of the late Joseph and Pearl Kidwell Hazelwood.
