Charles was retired from the State of West Virginia Highway Department District 1 as an inspector. He was a member of Humphreys Memorial Methodist Church and was a graduate of Sissonville High School. He was a U.S. Navy Sea Bee veteran having served in World War II, the Korean War, and three tours of Vietnam. Charles was one of the first to serve in Antarctica. He served his country proudly having earned the Good Conduct Medal with a bronze star, Antarctica Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with silver and bronze star, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon Bar, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross Medal Color with Palm) Civil Actions Medal, First Class Color with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and FMF Insignia. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Haggans Reed; three daughters, Peggy Ann Newhouse and Mary Virginia Proctor, both of Richmond, Va., Charlene Reed of Sissonville; seven grandchildren, Lisa Ann and Pamela Maria Newhouse, Joshua Bostic, Kodie Smith, Jacob Smith, Kelsey and Ashley Full; two great-grandchildren, Aedan Coble and Cassidy Camper; one sister, Mary Nolen of Charleston; and one brother, Boyd Reed of Sissonville. Memorial service will be Friday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, Sissonville, with the Rev. Terry Dean officiating. Interment with military graveside services will be provided by American Legion Post 61, Clendenin, will follow at Floral Hills Garden of Memories Mausoleum, Sissonville. Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Charles was a loving husband and father and will be truly missed by everyone that knew him and was an exceptional person. on February 16, 2006.5
