She was born in Oita, Japan, a daughter of the late Kohroku and Kikuye Hata. She met her husband, Paul, in 1946 and they were married in Tokyo, Japan, in 1949 and came to the USA in 1951. Yoshiko became an American citizen in 1956 and was very proud of her citizenship and never missed an election. Yoshiko finished high school in Oita, Japan, and graduated from Design and Fashion and Dressmaking School in Tokyo. She had worked for the Diamond Department Store in the bridal department. She also did private seamstress work for many prominient Charleston citizens. She was a member of Fairview UM Church, Kanawha Valley Christian Women's Association, Carbide Ladies Golf League, Carbide Bowling Leaague and the Nitro Senior and excercise group. Yoshiko was also preceded in death by her brother, Shoichi Hata. Mrs. Shockey is survived by her husband, Paul; son and wife, Paul Jr. and Pam Shockey of Cross Lanes; daughter and husband, Kay and Ray Little of Fairbanks, Alaska; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Takuko Hata of Osaka, Japan; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. on March 10, 2013.1

In retirement, she cared for her husband, Alex, who had dementia until his death in 1994. Helen enjoyed cooking, baking, scouring ?ea markets, cake decorating, sewing, and calligraphy. In addition to her parents and husband of 48 years, she was preceded in death by ?ve siblings, David, Gene, Donald, Clarence, Jr., and Jerry. Helen is survived by three children, Michael Boyko of Catonsville, MD, Lee (Linda) Boyko of Hanover, MD, and Sylvia (Jim) Stafford of Evergreen, CO; three siblings, Steve Holstein of Mt. Hope, WV, Betty Christian of Zanesville, OH, and Sandy Maynor of Mt. Hope, WV; two grandchildren, Craig and Matthew Boyko; and seven great-grandchildren. Helen will be interred with her husband at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. on March 24, 2020.5 She died on May 15, 2020 at Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, at age 93.5

Janice Aubrey Canterbury Janice Aubrey Canterbury Holstein Meredith, age 71, of Pax, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, W.Va. Born September 18, 1937, at Pax, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Barbara Canterbury of Pax, W.Va. Janice and her husband, Buck, were owners of the "BuckStop" Store in Pax, W.Va., for the past 22 years. Janice loved to fish with her Aunt Josephine Hughes of Pax. She loved to garden and spend time with her family, and she especially loved her "Classic Cokes." She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gene Haden Holstein of Elyria, Ohio; a sister, Mitzi Cimino of Chrisman, Ill; and mother-in-law, Rachel Williams Meredith of Pax, W.Va. She was the beloved wife of Larry "Bucky" Meredith of Pax, W.Va., and the mother of Wesley Holstein and his wife, Shirley, of Grafton, Ohio, and Kim Holstein Downing of Pax, W.Va. She is also survived by two sisters, Connie Pearson and her husband, Howard, of Oak Hill and Judy Barley and her husband, Paul, of Maple Fork; two brothers, George Canterbury and his wife, Donna, of Maple Fork and Pat Canterbury and his wife, Jill, of Pax; grandchildren, Gina Kincaid of Pax, Jason (Katie) and Brandon Holstein of Grafton, W.Va., and Chet and Tyler Downing of Pax, W.Va; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa Ludwick and Park Kincaid, both of Pax. Burial will follow in Pax Community Cemetery at Pax, W.Va. Other than her parents, survivors include her daughter, Kristen Roberts, and her companion, Nicholas Logan, of Mount Hope, W.Va; a granddaughter, Alyssa Logan; Lisa's former husband, Craig Roberts of Point Pleasant, W.Va; brothers, David Holstein and his wife Lisa of Beckley, W.Va., and their children, Zachary, Savannah, Emma Grace, and Ethan Holstein, a special niece and David's daughter from a previous marriage, Jennifer Leonard and her husband Travis and their son, Cason of Kansas, Steve Franklin Holstein and wife Jill of Wheeling, W.Va., and Jamie Holstein and wife Jennifer of Beckley, W.Va., and their children, Tyler and Austin Holstein, both of Beckley, W.Va; many uncles, aunts, friends, and extended family; Lisa's lifelong best friend, Kimberly Menei Ferrell of Chesapeake, W.Va; and her special friend, Sam Pack of North Carolina. Burial will follow at the Dock Lively Cemetery at Long Branch, W.Va. on August 18, 2008.1
