Evelyn was a member of Windsor Hills Baptist Church. She served the Lord as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendant of the Junior Department and Church Clerk. Evelyn worked 23 and 1/2 years for J.M. Turner and Co. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Grover, who died April 2, 2006; her parents, Lenzy and Mamie Byrd; her sister, Helen and husband, J. Doyle Austin; two brothers-in-law, O.C. Austin and Forest Lloyd; and sister-in-law, Lucille Minter. Having no children of her own, Evelyn is survived by nephews who were like sons to her, Roger N. Austin and wife, Belinda, Roanoke, D. Wayne Austin and wife, Nancy, Snellville, Ga; special cousin, Debby Beck and husband, Jack, Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Iris Lloyd, Vinton; brother-in-law, Jack Minter, Roanoke; and a cousin, J.W. Martin, Anaheim, Calif. Also surviving are special friends, Lawrence and Marian Dodson, Doris Basham, Opal and Banks Conner, Loretta Garber and Jeri Wood; and a host of special relatives, friends, church family and her beloved dog, Missy. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Monday, April 5, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. C. Lawrence Dodson and the Rev. Earl Dodson officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Windsor Hills Baptist Church. The family wishes to give many thanks to Dr. Richard Newton and to the staff of South Roanoke Nursing Home.
