Samuel D. Summers was buried at Summers Cemetery, Clay Co., West Virginia.4 He was born on October 25, 1890 at Newton, Roane Co., West Virginia.5 He married Dolpha May "Dolphia" Paxton, daughter of Harrison Leonard "Harris" "Clyde" Paxton and Mary Sue Elmore, on January 26, 1924 at Clay Co., West Virginia.3 Samuel D. Summers died on August 24, 1926 at Otter, Clay Co., West Virginia, at age 35.2 He CONSTABLE KILLED, POSSE SEEKS YOUTH. Green Jarvis and Brother Flee to Clay County Hills From Police and Sheriff but parents are arrested. Green Jarvis, the Clay county mountaineer youth of 24, wanted for the alleged slaying of Constable Samuel Summers at his home on Big Creek, Otter district Tuesday morning, was still hiding in the hilly fastnesses of the district today, while Sheriff Buren Stephenson and state police, continued their search for him. The officers also are seeking Early Jarvis, brother of Green, on a charge of cutting a young man by the name of Boggs in a fight which is said to have occurred at Ivydale, Clay county, sometime preceding the killing of Constable Summers. The state police headquarters was advised yesterday by Sheriff Stephenson, of the killing of Summers and the Clay official asked that troopers be sent into the district to help in the search for the Jarvis boys. Six troopers were sent at once to the Big Otter district and joined the searchers. They expected last night to arrest both Green and Early Jarvis but at noon today no reports from the officers had been received. According to Information sent to the state police headquarters. Constable Summers went to the home of Charles Jarvis on Big Creek on Tuesday morning to arrest Early, his son, on the cutting charge. The constable went to the front door and there was met by Charles Jarvis and his wife, Amanda. Standing back of them was their son Green, who, it is alleged, seeing the officer, opened fire, three bullets, passing over the heads of his father and mother and entering the body of Summers, killing him. Both of the Green boys then disappeared it is said. Officers later arrested Charles Jarvis and his wife, and held them as accomplices. The sheriff then organized a posse and started his search for the alleged slayer and his brother. on August 26, 1926.6

Carl Summers. Summers, 31, a seven-year veteran of the Lodi Police Department, died at 7 a. m. Saturday in the intensive care unit of Akron City Hospital. The Summit County Corner will rule in the case. A spokesman for the Summit County Coroner's office said the ruling may take a while because information must be gathered from the Medina County Sheriff's Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Lodi police, which are conducting a joint investigation of the incident. Summers was struck by a motor vehicle after he and Ptl. Steven Gray had stopped a man for driving an allegedly stolen pick-up truck on Avon Lake Road outside of Lodi. After the pick-up truck was pulled over, the suspect fled the vehicle with Gray in pursuit, and Summers staying back at the parked truck and police vehicles. When Gray returned, he found Summers lying unconscious in the middle of the road. Because Gray was chasing the suspect, he was unable to see or hear what type of vehicle hit Summers, police said. There have been few clues in the case and no positive identification of the hit-skip vehicle, Lodi Police Chief Jim Wantz said. "All we know is it was a motor vehicle that hit Summers," Wantz added. Lodi police are offering a $1,800 reward for any tips leading to the arrest of suspects in the case. Wantz said he hopes to raise as much as $10,000 for the fund. Summers, of Lodi, was a member of the American Federation of Police and Bethany Baptist Church. He was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal and citation for meritorious service as a member of the 377th Security Police Squadron while serving as an armored car commander. A graduate of Black River High School, he is survived by his wife, Susie; a daughter, Nancy, parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Carl B. Summers of Lodi; a sister, Mrs. Vickie Brown of Kentucky and three brothers, Samuel of Coventry, England and Richard and David of Lodi.
