Killed were Donald Curtis Griffith, 31, of Christiansburg and Luther Ronda Tickle, 36, of Radford. A third man at the house, Thomas J. Pannell, of East Main Street in Christiansburg has been charged with attempted robbery by violence, according to J. Patrick Graybeal, Montgomery County Commonwealth' Attorney. The owner of the house where the two men were shot was identified as Theodore Caldwell, 66. Graybeal said Caldwell told investigators he was in his garden working when he observed someone at his house. Caldwell said the men had carried a shotgun from his house and placed it in a car parked at the rear of his home. When Caldwell went to the house the men asked him to go to the ABC store with them and Caldwell said he would not, Graybeal said. Following this the men asked Caldwell for his billfold and he told them no, the Commonwealth's attorney said the investigation reveals. Caldwell was then reportedly hit on the head with a stick and the men began to beat him and pull at his clothing trying to get the billfold, officers said. An argument apparently followed between the two of the three men over whether or not to take the billfold. Caldwell said he threw the billfold behind a stove after the men had torn off his trousers in an attempt to get the billfold. While the men were arguing among themselves, Caldwell managed to get a .22 rifle, Graybeal said. Tickle was shot on the back porch of the house where he apparently died almost instantly. Griffith was found in a lane approximately 100 yards from the had been shot in the right chest, officers said. No charges have been placed against Caldwell, Graybeal said. on November 10, 1970.⁹

His praise would set the service ablaze. He would take off running and shift the atmosphere. Bro. Garry LOVED GOD. He would tell of God's goodness to all who would hear. From the pulpit to the hospital bed, no matter where he was, Bro. Garry was going talk about Jesus and witness about His power. Bro. Garry LOVED GOD. He loved to travel to services, conferences and preaching engagements. If there was a service, Bro. Garry was there. He was faithful. Bro. Garry was a firey preacher. From his own words, "He never drove a car but God allowed him to travel the east coast to preach the gospel." He would say, "If God wanted him there, He would get him there." Bro. Garry LOVED GOD. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Trump and Mary Trump, both of Christiansburg, VA. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Michael Akers; her sons, Mickey Akers and Mark Akers; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Akers; and her beloved grandchildren, Hailey Akers and Macie Akers. Martha was a proud long-time member of the Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad and a lifelong resident of the Christiansburg and Shawsville community.
