Jim, as he was called, served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, receiving honorable discharge and the rank of Staff Sergeant. When discharged, he became a law enforcement officer for Newport News. He met the love of his life whom he wedded, Diane, and later returned to Roanoke with his own family, where he was raised and schooled. Here, he worked at Norfolk and Western Railroad where he retired and served as union chairman of the IBEW. He was past worshipful master at Pleasants Lodge #63, worthy patron for both Carrie Lee and Etta chapters of the Order of Eastern Star, and guardian of Bethel 7, International Order of Jobs Daughters. He was a member of West End United Methodist Church all of his life, and loved spending time with his family at home in the Cave Spring Area of Roanoke County. on April 17, 2016.2
