His Social Security Number was 235-10-5672.1 Gale Jackson "Gayle Jaxon" Surface Gayle Jaxon Surface, 93, was born December 4, 1907 at Fenwick, the son of the late John and Hallie Elmore Surface. He was one of four children, two brothers, Ohlen "Skip" Surface died in 1951 and Claude Surface in 1961. His sister, Wavie married Farley Bowers (deceased) and lives in Texas. The family lived at Fenwick across the tracks from where Kyle O’Dell formerly had a meat market and from the Methodist Church. A childhood memory, Gayle recalled was of his mother's trips to town for needed purchases and when she came back on the train she would always bring him a little bag of candy, which she would lean from the train on the way as it passed their house and toss Gayle the candy. She would ride to the train stop a little ways down and walk back. His father lost his life in an accident at the Saxman Coal and Coke Company in 1926. Gayle has a clipping from the "Advance" by the late C. Donee Cook about his father's funeral., "a man held in the highest esteem by his town's people" whose funeral was attended by 1,200 people (80 cars full) Very remarkable, don't you agree? After John Surfaces' death, Hallie brought her children to Richwood, where she cared for and supported them on a $30 per month compensation check plus what she earned sometimes cooking at Juergen's Restaurant. She saw that they graduated from high school. Gayle was active in the RHS Glee Club and was in "The Garden of the Shah" from which he was dubbed "Sheik" by his classmates. He was also on the staff of Wee Tell It All and G. E. O. R. C. Tribute written in his annual by former classmates bespeak his popularity and the admiration they had for his artistic ability. He signed his works at that time simply as Gayle and later, Gayle Surface and at the present ... Gayle Jaxon Surface.2 He was buried at Richwood Cemetery, Richwood, Nicholas Co., West Virginia.8 He was born on December 4, 1907 at Fenwick, Nicholas Co., West Virginia.9,1,2,8,3,4 He married Dosha Savannah Russell on October 10, 1934 at Summersville, Nicholas Co., West Virginia.9,10 Gale Jackson "Gayle Jaxon" Surface and Dosha Savannah Russell were divorced in 1959.11 Gale Jackson "Gayle Jaxon" Surface married Verna Sparks on September 1, 1961 at Richwood, Nicholas Co., West Virginia.4 Gale Jackson "Gayle Jaxon" Surface died on January 22, 2000 at Richwood, Nicholas Co., West Virginia, at age 92.12,1,8
