Hugh Douglas Rippeto1,2,3

M, b. April 7, 1836, d. July 25, 1900
Hugh Douglas Rippeto was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 5th South, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah.4,2 He was born on April 7, 1836 at Tennessee.5,6 He married Irene Ray "Irena" Gray, daughter of Edward Gray and Nancy Akers, on May 16, 1867 at Jackson Co., Missouri.1,3 Hugh Douglas Rippeto died on July 25, 1900 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah, at age 64.7 He HUGH D. RIPPETO DEAD. WELL KNOWN MINING MAN EXPIRED LAST NIGHT. He Had Been in Poor Health for a Year, But was Able to be Out — Friday Last the Final Change Began. Died - In Salt Lake City, July 25, 1900, Hugh D. Rippeto, in his sixty-fifth year. A sterling, warm-hearted, genial man was Hugh Rippeto. He was, too, a most capable man. His business was mining; he had followed it in every State and Territory of the coast, and those who knew him best and longest trusted him most. They trusted his judgment, they never for a moment doubted his incorruptible integrity. He was well informed on current events, he was a strong but absolutely fair partisan; he had a great love for his country and exulted in her progress and power. He hated a mean act with all his mind, he was blunt and outspoken, but the heart in his breast was tender as a woman's. He was a strong type of the brave souls that have searched for and brought forth the treasures from the hills and deserts of the West, and attributes of the class. He knew all the letters of the alphabet of the rocks and could set them to words and make them give up the secret of how they were created, through what fires they had been tried, by what glaciers they had been planed, what prescriptions in the laboratory of the deeps had been tried upon them. A high and useful life went out when he died. He had been drooping for a year past under a complication of complaints. He first discovered that he was failing by the unsteady action of his heart; then the impeded circulation brought trouble to his eyes, and so the disease extended until he was but the ghost of his former self. He struggled up the street every day until a week ago, and it was pitable to see then, but last Friday the final change began and last evening he died. He was a true man and will be sincerely mourned wherever to a miner's cabin the news of his death is carried. on July 27, 1900.7
