Born on February 24, 1924, he was the son of Effie Hall and Horace Sherman Board. He graduated from Hargrave Military Academy and attended the University of Florida at Gainesville. Bill served during World War II as a member of the Army Airborne Infantry and was commissioned in the United States Air Force in 1950. He served on active duty until 1953 and later became a member of the Air Force Reserves. During Bill's professional life he served as Executive Vice-President of the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce for over sixteen years, until his retirement in 1988. His professional activities included membership in the VA Association of the Chamber of Commerce Executives where he served as secretary, vice-president and president. He was one of the sixteen valley businessmen who organized the Regional Partnership of the Roanoke Valley and served as Secretary and Vice-President of that partnership. He served as Secretary of Salem's Industrial Development Authority for a number of years. Bill also served as President of the Salem Kiwanis and Secretary of Salem's We the People Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Roanoke Valley Bicentennial Committee. He was the recipient of honors from the VA General Assembly through House Resolution #67 for his accomplishments in the area of economic development. He was named Salem's "Citizen of the Year" in 1984 and received the Kiwanis "Humanitarian of the Year Award" in 2002. Bill was a lifelong Baptist who served as Chair of the Deacons and teacher of the Berean Bible Class at Salem Baptist Church. In January of 1981 he began a Christian ministry at the Roanoke County Salem Jail where he served as a religious counselor and coordinator of religious volunteers. He was predeceased by his wife Virginia Vaughan Board and is survived by his daughters, Betty Smith (Jerry), Sue Baldwin (Rob) and his son, Joe Gregory (Vona), his six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, Friday, April 11, 2014. A funeral to honor the life of William Sherman (Bill) Board will take place on Saturday April 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Everett Kier, officiating. Interment will follow the service at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. on April 11, 2014.2

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Johnston Hall of the home; two daughters, Sandra H. Laing of Roanoke and Grace H. Wright of Martinsville; three sons, Allen D. Hall of Wichita Falls, Texas, Curtis Dale Hall of Spencer and Donnie M. Hall of Fairfax; one brother, Posey Staunton Hall Jr. of Buchanan; three grandchildren; and one step-grandson. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. The Revs. E.T. "Tommy" Herndon Jr. and Ferd Wagoner will preside. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the home on the Preston Road. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1290 Seminole Trail, Suite 2, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. on April 1, 1999.3

Turner died on February 26, 1943 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 74.1,3 She The body of Mrs. S. R. "Nannie" Hall, 75, of 515 Roane St., was discovered Friday about 8 p.m. by her granddaughter, who had called at the home where Mrs. Hall had lived alone since the death of her husband, S. R. Hall, about a year ago. Mrs. Hall had been dead three or four hours. She had not been in noticeably ill health. She leaves an only son, A. C. Hall, of Charleston, a sister, Mrs. Murry Pendleton of Charleston and a half brother, Claude Turner of Elkview. The body was removed to the Bartlett mortuary pending the return from Florida of the son. on February 27, 1943.3

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Lee Childress and her husband, Andy of Ocala, Florida and Kaye Weddle and her husband, Henry, of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Donald Lee Catron, Sr., Sherry Mitchell, Patricia Jeffries, Melissa Light, and Lisa Kaye Baker; and five great-grandchildren, Donald Lee Catron, Jr., Nicki Mitchell, Jeremy Mitchell, Matthew Jeffries, and Katie Baker. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements by Lotz Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel. on June 10, 2005.2
