He had a passion for fishing and boating and also loved gardening. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Manning Howell; one daughter, Donna Haraburda, and her husband, Matt, of Gloucester; two sons, Dale Howell and his wife, Regina, of Yorktown, and Dean Howell and his wife, Terri, of Newport News; two sisters, Molly Harrison and her husband, Billy, and Ruth Rice and her husband, Bill, all of Hampton; one brother, Linwood Howell and his wife, Pat, of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren, Joshua Howell, Casey Howell, Logan Howell and Mitchell Haraburda. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Ruby Howell; his brother, Henry Howell; and his sister, Evelyn Howell. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. on February 10, 2002.4

Thelma retired at age 65 as a Chief Rate Clerk with N & W Railroad, now Norfolk Southern. She formed the first railroad retirement luncheon at the country club with seven people and ended up with 200 by year 2012. She also started a bowling league and became the secretary for 17 years. She filled the bowling alley with Good Timers; they bowled at All Star Lanes in 1968, then moved to Hill Top Lanes. The teams are still going strong today. She enjoyed playing Rummy and watching game shows on T.V. She was a member of Edgewood Christian Church. The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for their kindness and care. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel. on February 12, 2013.1
