Graveside services will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family would like to extend "Thank You's" to Red Hill Baptist Church and Good Samaritan Hospice, and Christina Poff and Jayne, his nurse for the great care they gave. on September 15, 2013.4

After retirement, he continued as Chairman of the Board of FNB Bank. Bill was preceded in death by parents Alfred P. and Annie G. Rakes, sister and brother-in-law Nelda and Willard King; brother Hubert Rakes; sisters Joyce Rakes and Shelby Jean Rakes; and great-granddaughter Kaylyn Perdue Thrush. Bill's memory will live in the hearts of his beloved wife of 70 years, Georgie Rakes; daughter and son-in-law Teresa and David Schoonover; son and daughter-in-law Gary (Butch) and Deborah Rakes; sister Linda Battle, sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and LD Adkins; sister-in-law Evelyn Rakes; grandchildren Shawn and Cheryl Rakes, Christina and Travis Perdue, Chelsea Rakes, and Casey and Marc Haren. He also has many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and associates. Graveside service with military honors at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. on November 22, 2023.5

Evelyn Geneva Crotts Evelyn Crotts Rakes, 92, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. She was born on February 12, 1932, to the late Amos Maxwell and Erma Carlena Frantz Crotts. Throughout her life, she grew to love ceramics, became an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and cheered on the Washington Redskins which brought her much happiness. What she cherished most, though, was her family and the time they spent together. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Hubert G. Rakes. Her surviving family includes her daughters, Judith Rakes Robertson (Clinton), Debbie Rakes Puckett, and Cathy Rakes Schiffer; grandchildren, Kristin Hatcher Famuliner (Chance), Richard “Chip” Hatcher, and Kristen Puckett (Keeoyn); great-grandchildren, Noah Hatcher, Terra Famuliner, Marin Famuliner, Randi Puckett, Zamari Ramsey, Xaeden Ramsey, Keylan Ramsey, Keyonni Ramsey, Triston Duncan (Chandler), Izik Duncan, and Aiddon Duncan. She was involved in church her entire life and was a member at West Salem Baptist for over 20 years. Christ was her solid ground and she loved the Lord with her whole heart. Her life exemplified 2nd Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. The family is eternally grateful for Dr. Konstance, Good Samaritan Hospice, and especially her nurse, Kendra, who stayed with the family during Evelyn’s passing.
