Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Peggy Geary, Richard Geary and friend, Ursula; daughter, Peggy Lloyd and Ralph; stepdaughter, Dolores Gilliam; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his loving little pet Dachshund, Jody; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; and friends. Special thanks to caregivers, Valorie and Rick Ferguson, Linda Mize, Good Samaritan Hospice, and all the doctors and nurses at the V.A. Medical Center. Geary, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; 66, of Roanoke, made his peaceful transition, after a brief battle with leukemia, to join his grandfather, parents and other loved ones on Saturday, December 11, 2004, surrounded by his loving wife, Peggy, children, Angela, Lisa, and Mark, and cherished granddaughter, Jenny. He was a dedicated Roanoke City Firefighter and EMT for 38 years, a Boy Scout Leader for 15 years, loved to play golf with his buddies and go to Pinehurst, N.C. each year. Bobby was a naturalist in tune with animals and nature. His joy for the last 6 years was his granddaughter, Jenny. In addition to his wife, children and granddaughter, he is survived by his brother, Richard; sister, Peggy; very dear friends, Carol and Skeezie Runyon; and numerous close friends with the Roanoke City Fire Department, Hollins University and his golf buddies. He will be sadly missed. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at Oakey's East Chapel with the Rev. Diane Scribner Clevenger officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home before the service. Love is patient and kind, love never ends. Arrangements by Oakey's East Chapel and Crematory, 977-3909. on December 13, 2004.2

He was a member of Vinton Baptist Church and a retired pipefitter for the Norfolk & Western Railway, with 47½ years of service. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Whitenack Updike. Surviving are his daughter, Myrtleine U. Gilmore; son-in-law, Raymond L. Gilmore; two grandchildren and their husbands, Theresa and John Whitacre of Winchester, Valerie and Jerry Martin of Richmond; five great-grandchildren, Carissa and Brian Whitacre, Ray, George and Edward Martin. Also surviving is a kind and faithful neighbor, Mildred K. Peters; a childhood friend, John W.Greer and several dear nieces and nephews. It is suggested that memorials be made to the Vinton Baptist Church Building Fund. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 17th, 1985, with the Rev. Dr. William P. Warnock officiating. Burial will be in Fair View Cemetery. He was also a longtime member of Vinton Baptist Church where he served as a lifetime deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtleine Updike Gilmore. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa G. and John Whitacre, of Winchester, Va., and Valerie G. and Jerry Martin, of Richmond, Va; five grandchildren, Carissa Leah Mulahn, Brian Eric Whitacre and wife, Jill, Ray Edward Martin and wife, Stephanie, George Gilmore Martin, and Edward Lynn Martin and wife, Katie; and five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Micah, Caleb, Haleigh, and Emma. Funeral Services will be conducted at noon on Friday, December 3, 2010, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Dr. Bill Booth officiating. Burial will follow in Fair View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Vinton Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 2, 2010, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221. on December 2, 2010.2

     Samuel Homer Strickler was born on December 5, 1855 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,2 He married Harriett Elizabeth Conner, daughter of Jonathan Conner and Mahala Thrash, on February 28, 1878 at Floyd Co., Virginia; The family bible and obituary say the marriage date is Feb 27, 1878.1,5,2,6,4 Samuel Homer Strickler died on July 23, 1930 at Iaeger, McDowell Co., West Virginia, at age 74; Killed in a fight.2 He Charges Preferred After Death of Opponent in Fight. WELCH, July 30 — H. J. Harman, 55 years old, president of the Sandy River district. McDowell county, board of education, was at liberty today under $5,000 bond to await action of the grand jury on charges growing out of the death July 23 of Samuel H. Strickler, 74 years old, of Iaeger. Harman waived a preliminary hearing following his arrest yesterday and furnished bond. It was charged that the Saturday before Strickler's death he and Harman engaged in an altercation at Iaeger which resulted in blows. The following day, relatives of Strickler alleged, he suffered a stroke of appoplexy and died a few days later. on July 30, 1930.7
