He was 80 years of age. He left this world peacefully, listening to his favorite music with his family close by. He was born on July 27, 1924 in Princeton, West Virginia, the son of Ira Shelton Lucas and Callie Estelle Lucas. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his brother, Kenneth Shelton Lucas; and his sister, Alice Dean Lucas. He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Elinor Baker Lucas of Roanoke; a daughter, Mary Paige Lucas Tremaine and her husband, Richard Tremaine, of Anchorage, Alaska; a son, Stephen J. Lucas and his wife, JoDonna Lucas of Denton, Texas; and three grandchildren, Michael, Anna and William Tremaine, of Anchorage, Alaska, to whom he was known as "Papa", who knew everything, could fix anything and always had time for them. He loved to travel to Alaska and Texas to see the "young 'uns". He had numerous in-laws, cousins, etc. throughout Virginia and the United States. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School, where he was in the band. He was a professional musician for a time, playing saxophone with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and others. He also played at many local functions in and around Roanoke. He was a life long dedicated Virginia Tech fan. He was very proud of his service in the United States Army in World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. He was engaged in combat at Manila, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Papua and other locations and was one of the first paratroopers to jump into Tokyo near the end of the war. He was a member of the 11th Airborne Division Association, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Lions Club and a life member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans with membership in the General W.L. Cabell Camp of Dallas, Texas and dual membership in the Fincastle Rifles of Roanoke. He was quite a scholar of the War Between the States and was always reading and researching that subject. He was a past President of the Roanoke Valley Coin Club and was always active in the community. He played semi-professional baseball in Roanoke at one time and was a retired salesman for the Nestle Candy Company. Following his retirement, he was very active in genealogy and became the 'official historian and genealogist" for the Lucas family. He organized the annual Lucas reunions at Terry's Fork, Virginia, and was happy to hand out to all the relatives family group sheets, biographical information and other printed material on Lucas family members, dating from before the American Revolution to the present day. Without his hard work, a great deal of the history of the Lucas family would have been undiscovered and remained unknown to this day. He continued to give to others by donating his body to science so that others may live or be cured of disease as a result of what may be learned from his donation. He was loved very much, not only by his immediate family, but his extended family and others. No matter how he felt physically, when asked he would always answer with a smile and the same response: "Fine". He is in a far better place now, a place where he feels no pain and where he can be with those who have gone before. We miss him. on August 23, 2004.1
