Roberts, all of Roanoke; a brother, Jacob Helm, of Elliston; and one sister, Mrs. Martha Akers, Long Branch, W. Va. Interment was in Fairview. Active pallbearers were: E. L. Whitlock, M. E. Mayhew, Bruce Akers, F. E. Oliver, L. R. Bostwick and J. E. Baker. Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. J. W. Simmerman, Dr. J. G. Davis, H. E. Hogan, D. V. Helm, Dr. W. A. Stores, J. W. Fitzpatrick, J. G. "Tommy" Helm went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on March 24, 1929, he spent all his years in the Roanoke Valley. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Joyce Helm; and his parents, Walter A. and Ituria B. Helm. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who took great pride and joy in his family. Left behind to cherish his memory are his daughter, Becky Barber and husband, Bob; sons, Jerry Helm and wife, Candace, David Helm and wife, Kathy, and Jim Helm and wife, Chris; sister, Frances Gillock; and brother, Bobby Helm. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Marc Barber (Angela), Tina Lowe (Jeff), Jay Helm (Dawn), Sarah Helm, Christopher Helm, Anna Helm, Bronson Helm, Austin Helm and Catherine Joyce Helm; as well as 11 great-grandchildren. Tommy was a faithful member of Villa Heights Baptist Church for over 60 years where he was a leader and servant in many capacities through the years. He was also a long time member of the Villa Heights Lions Club. Early in his career he operated Helm's Grocery on Orange Avenue alongside his wife and mother. He later opened Thriftway Supermarket in Hollins as well as Tomboy Supermarket in Vinton and later on Plantation Road. After a long career in the grocery business, his "retirement" was spent in real estate, first with Boone and Company and later with Long and Foster. He was also an avid bowler and loved to travel. He was blessed with good health and the ability to stay active until just prior to the time of his death. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the caregivers who so tenderly ministered to him in the last days, Takreemah Mahoney, LaQuasia Smith, Asia Smith and Bronson Helm. We are also thankful for the good work of Good Samaritan Hospice as well as family friend and physician, Dr. Don H. Bivins. on March 3, 2010.5

James Benjamin Perdue was buried at Monte Vista Park Cemetery, Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,4 He was born on April 6, 1865 at Franklin Co., Virginia; His death certificate has a birth year of 1868.1,2,3,4 He married Hattie Kansas Helm, daughter of John Henry Helm and Missouri Angeline Hall, on January 10, 1894 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.1 James Benjamin Perdue died on April 9, 1936 at Bluefield, Tazewell Co., Virginia, at age 71.2,3,4 He James Benjamin Perdue, a merchant of this section for the past 45 years, dropped dead at 7:10 o'clock last are evening in his store on Virginia avenue in Bluefeld, Va., victim of heart attack. Mr. Perdue, who celebrated his seventy-first birthday last Monday, was waiting on Garland Williams at the time he was stricken. He slumped and fell to the floor behind the counter. Life was extinct when Mr. Williams reached him. Dr. E. M. Tanner, of this city, and Dr. O. K. Phlegar, of Bluefleld, Va., were called. They said apparently Mr. Perdue's death came simultaneous with the attack. Mr. Perdue came to Bluefeld, Va., eleven years ago from Coopers where for a number of years he was engaged as a merchant. He had also operated stores at Matoaka and Giatto having spent about 45 years of life as merchant of this section. His store at Bluefeld, Va., was operated under the name of J. B. Perdue. Mrs. Perdue has been for the past seven weeks at her home on Virginia Side, suffering from high blood pressure friends the family fear that her condition will not be able to stand the shock caused by the sudden death of her husband. Mr. Perdue is widely, known throughout this section held in high esteem by all who knew him. During his eleven years as resident of Bluefleld, Va., he had become one of the outstanding citizens of the Virginia Side. He was native of Floyd county, Virginia, and was born, April 6, 1865, being a son of Ellas and Mary Mitchell Perdue. Mr. Perdue is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Lucy M. Hood, two brothers, Robert J. Perdue, of Cooper Hill, Va.. and one sister, Mrs. O. F. Hunt, of Ben Mountain, Va. He was a lifelong member of the Baptist church and at the time of his death was chairman of board of deacons of Memorial Baptist church, Bluefield, Va. on April 10, 1936.3

Mrs. Shelton was a former resident of Roanoke, Va., Bristol and had made her home in for three years with her brother, Karl J. Perdue. She was the widow of Thomas F. Shelton and a member of the Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her brother, of Bristol, and a nephew, Karl J. Perdue Jr. of Bristol. on October 21, 1967.10

Clarence Sorgee, 57, resident of 105 East Parker road, died at a local hospital last night at 8:30 o'clock. He had been seriously ill for the past four weeks. Mr. Sorgee was born and reared in Greenville and was a son of the late James Thomas Sorgee and Mary Smith Sorgee Campbell. The latter died here on February 17, 1945. Mr. Sorgee was engaged in the show business and had operated refreshment concessions in connection with them. Last summer he operated the canteen at the Paris Mountain State park. He was member of Monaghan Lodge No. 251, A. F. M. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bonnie Ruth Case Sorgee; one adopted son, Larry Sorgee; one sister, Mrs. O. C. Smith; his step-father, Noble B. Campbell; and four half-brothers, C. H., A. D., R. O. and Ira S. Campbell. Interment will be in Graceland cemetery. Members of Monaghan Lodge No. 251, A. F. M., will have charge of the Masonic rites at the grave. on April 30, 1946.2
