Talley was born in Wise County, Va. and raised in Floyd County, Va. where he graduated from Floyd County High School. He entered the funeral business in 1954 and graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1957. He entered Life Insurance Sales in Lynchburg and transferred to Greensboro, N.C. And became district manager in Durham, N.C. He left life insurance sales to join the Nestle Company Sales Department and for 18 years sold coffee and tea products. He became employed with John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem and later joined Oakey Funeral Service in Roanoke. After nine years with Oakey Funeral Service, he returned and rejoined John M. Oakey & Son in Salem. Talley was a Christian and most recently held his church membership with the Ocala West United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Salem Rotary Club, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, E.M., Sr. and Irene W. Talley; and son-in-law, Beverly G. Young. His surviving family includes his wife and love of his life, Hazel Talley; children, Mark S. Talley and wife, Donna, and Rita G. Young; granddaughters, Danielle Talley, Jessica Talley, and Autumn Young; grandsons, Justin Young and wife, Heather, and Reid Young and wife, Tracy; brothers, Paul Talley and wife, Kirsten, and William (Bill) Talley and wife, Judy; great-grandchildren, Mason P. Young, Mackenzie Martin, and Hollie Martin; and Talley’s best buddy, Talley’s Little Sugar. Gene was born on April 30, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Barnett and Becky Swirsky Koalkin. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, under the command of General George S. Patton, where he assisted in the liberation of those suffering in concentration camps in Germany. After being honorably discharged, Gene furthered his education at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute where he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After more than 40 years of loyal and productive service, Gene retired as an officer of Arnold Diamond Construction Company of Great Neck, N.Y. He also was a devoted long-time member, and served as President, of Temple Emanuel, of East Meadow, N.Y. Above all, Gene will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He will be missed! In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Sidney Koalkin, and sister-in-law, Sunny Koalkin. Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his wife of 40 years, Linda Richardson Koalkin, of Ocala, Fla; daughters, Barbara Barza and husband, Al, of Piedmont, Calif., and Sheila Gallanty and husband, Alan, of Westport, Conn; stepson, James Crosier, Jr., of Christiansburg, Va; grandchildren, Joshua Barza, of Piedmont, Calif., Eric Gallanty and wife, Shannon, of East Walpole, Mass., Justin Gallanty, of Westport, Conn., and stepgrandson, Brandon Crosier, of Christiansburg, Va; niece, Sarah Persha; and nephew, Matt Koalkin.
